"GeorgeM, the machine that holds the data that you download, decided that it was time to verify that the RAID array is in good shape. That will slow down disk access until the verify procedure is complete. The main effect is slowing down the rate at which work can be created. It's likely that we'll run out of work in the next hour or so. Things should recover automatically when it's done." (30 Jan 2019, 3:33:02 UTC)

42) Message boards : Projects : Using BOINC for cracking master key of RANSOMWARE (Message 89591)

A (reliable?) tool for your ransomware seems listed here https://www.nomoreransom.org/en/decryption-tools.html and the user initiating this discussion https://twitter.com/demonslay335/status/975751987030523904 might give you additional details abt the reasons why he feels dc isn't necessary. Good luck !

Hi everyone, my name is Sebastian, in the company I work we recently had an attack of ransomware CRYSIS DHARMA .BIT that have no master key release yet and while I was researching about it i found out that there are lots of ppl who suffer the same problem without any solution than paying the ransom.

As far as I could found, cracking a crypto key by brute force is all about computing power, an incredible computing power unavailable nowadays for anyone, unless you have some quantum computer, but unavailable doesnt means impossible.

So this idea came to my mind, what if we can use the computing power of 1000's of computers to crack these ransomwares? And BOINC came to my mind.

I have been reading about BOINC and how to create new projects and even if I dont think I could do it by myself, it seems to be "possible" to create a project for this, to run some kind of decrypter to get the master keys for any ransomware and I guess there would be a lot of ppl interested in supporting this with their own computers.

So havent anyone thought this could be done or Im missing something?

Someone has been burning the midnight oil at Berkeley =:)
Given that this sort of pattern is "the norm" these days I think it may actually be an automated process - once the manual stuff has been done a cron job takes over and the databases and servers gradually come back to life in the correct sequence. Why sit in an empty lab (or wind up the ones other half by playing with your laptop) while watching for a massive task to complete so you can start the next when the computer can do it for you?
Because a vaillant scientist burning the midnight oil alone in his lab in the dead of the night, using headphones to listen to raw radiotelescope data and using a quill to write grant requests is more romantic, that's why ! What are you really trying to do, Rob ? Are you attempting to sell us the magic of reality ?

Jokes aside, thanks for your rectification; illuminating as always.

I haven't got new WUs since it's been back...

Just started really flowing in the last 15 minutes or so, at least on 3 of 4 crunchers here.

Server crash
As you probably notice we had serious crash on server.
Unfortunately, both SSD's with project database in RAID1 configuration died simultaneously...
I have restored database from backup on second server but data are 24h oldest then crash time.

The project managers don't appear to think the courtesy of an updated twitter or facebook account is important in order to keep their participants in the loop regarding their servers' status ? =:/

From http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/universeathome.pl.html :

I have a couple of data files that are ready to report and upload, but haven't been able to do so in the last couple of days, for Universe@Home.
I keep getting the Communication deferred. I would like to be able to upload those files soon, before the 11/25/18 deadline.

Is there an ETA or update on when the servers will be back in communication?

(Re. your pigeon-update post) Hope this will help make up your mind. Back-up post before sending it, and explain why everyone must read it (I sure would like to read it =:)

Oh, and the S@h servers are working fine at the moment, 3 or 4 hours remain until maintenance outage.

I'd just finished a pigeon-update post, with pictures and everything that I'd uploaded and it vanished. I didn't have the links saved which was a bit stupid, but I was tired so I'm going to use that as my excuse. I don't know if I can be bothered to reconstruct it all now. I haven't been back since either. I might later, I don't know.
