When I attempt to install BOINC 4.45 I get a message that tells me that there is another installation in progress and that I have to quit that one before I can install BOINC. Yet there is no other intallation in progress, and I can install other programs with no problem.

Is there something in the BOINC install program that's causing this or is it something to do with my computer (PC, windows XP)

Make sure BOINC is no longer running. Check this through Task Manager (rightclick on the Windows Taskbar, select Task Manager, Processes tab); make sure boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe and any science applications are no longer running.

If that's so, exit Task Manager (click the X).
Go to Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs.
Check if BOINC is in the list here. If it is, click on it and click remove. This will only uninstall your present Boinc version, not hurt any of the work units you may still have.

If there isn't an entry called Boinc in the list, try to reboot your computer.
Then try to start the installation of Boinc again. Make sure you only start up one installation of Boinc, not two.

If you had installed it as a normal application and then installed it as a service you may have an additional short-cut in the start-up folder.

I would like to see the logs if you still have them ...

Zip up the *.TXT files in the BOINC directory and send them to p.d.buck@comcast.net

Thanks!

On a 0.2 GHz MMX with 192 RAM and Win98, which i use with ICS to connect my private network to my ISP, i was only able to install the Single-user installation although i would prefer the Service installation.

As i am not able to shutdown or restart Win98 without exiting 4.45 first (or kill its process during shutdown) i intend to replace this useless piece of shit with the older 4.19 as soon as possible. As 4.18 was running without such problems with WinME on another computer i hope this will solve my problem with the blocked shutdown.

That's not a BOINC problem, it's a Windows 98 problem. Installing as a service isn't supported by Win98 for anything. As for the shutdown issue, there have been threads about it on the SETI@Home Questions & Problems boards. Here is one such, with a solution, a link to a downloadable .pif file.
