How does one deal with projects sending you far more work than you can cope with? I've got my preferences set up to allow World Community Grid 25% of the BOINC time on my i7, but they're sending me dozens of WUs which take 20-30 times as long as their estimates, and go "high priority" and throw the other project (Rosetta) off on all threads and still come in late. Suggestions? Or should I just stop accepting tasks from them until they get their act together? |

BOINC takes a few days to get the estimated times right, and every little thing seems to affect it (even watching Netflix while it's running). Until the estimated times correct themselves, try lowering the network buffer in computation settings. The default is 0.1 with a max additional 0.5, which is about 2.4 hours of work with another 12 on top. |

I think the max additional is actually 0.25 rather than 0.5. BOINC is notorious for getting task estimates completely off: generally, over time BOINC should start to give more accurate predictions for your computer. The max additional tasks can be reduced in the Advanced view > Computing preferences > network usage. If you are always connected to the internet then you should probably use very low values here: I actually use 0.00 for both. |

If you are always connected to the internet then you should probably use very low values here: I actually use 0.00 for both. I used to use 0 for both, but some projects like SIMAP finish tasks in about 30-45 minutes, and while I don't have mine yet, I've heard that new GPUs finish tasks even faster than that. I decided to use the work buffer again so that I'm not contacting the server so often and so I can still run when the internet stops working. It's probably better for the servers anyway, because you're occasionally asking for a lot instead of constantly asking for a little. |
