I was wondering why neither GPUGRID, nor PrimeGrid were downloading any work units, until I opened up the event log to find this in one of my first few lines.

This computer is using an AMD A6-6400K, so it should be compatible. I'm also using the proprietary drivers, and there is no dedicated video card, so this isn't some issue with needing a dummy plug or anything.

What should I do?

EDIT: If I restart boinc, but not the computer, the GPU is found, and everything works normally after that. Looks like something during bootup is causing this issue.

In Linux it can take quite a while before the X-drivers are fully loaded, which is why when you restart BOINC at a later time, the chances are high that the GPU is found.

It's often been noted that display drivers in Linux take a long time to initialise, and it is possible for the BOINC client to have started (and passed the GPU detection phase) before they're ready. You just need to add a delay to the BOINC startup script.

I've tried a method that has been posted several times on different BOINC-related forums, where I would open /etc/init.d/boinc-client with a text editor, and add sleep 5 to the line after 'else' under the start() function. I tried it with a 15 second delay, and still nothing.

After downgrading to Ubuntu 13.04, I find that I receive no work units at all now, even though the GPU is being detected (still need to restart it via init.d to get that to work). However, I don't know if this lack of GPU units is a problem with myself only, since someone on my team is experiencing similar issues. I've checked his event log via teamviewer, and his GPU is also being detected, but receiving no work, despite the project preferences allowing GPU work.

Is there a larger problem here that's BOINC related, or is it just a coincidence?

You'll never get any work from GPUGrid with that configuration, because the project supports NVidia cards only. I can't speak for PrimeGrid.

Yes, I double checked that, and you're right for GPUGrid. PrimeGrid definitely supports ATI/AMD though.

I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr on two rigs and give up because I too could not get any GPU Projects to start up, they would download the abort on starting.
NVIDIA GPU test was a GTX 550Ti and a GTX 660Ti.
Failed projects Collatz Conjecture, GPUGrid, and MilkyWay@Home

Went back to 12.04 and back to running GPU Projects

Sorry forgot to say what version on BOINC 7.2.42
