"boinc.msi is not a valid installation package for the product BOINC try to find the installation package boinc.msi in a folder from which you can install boinc.what should I do?

On what version of Windows? Have you updated the Windows Installer completely (through Windows Update for instance)? You'll need WI 2.0 for Win98/SE/ME and WI 3.1 for Win2k/XP at minimum.

Also make sure you don't install to a hidden partition or directory.

Try another directory, try on another partition or drive if you have more than one.

Can you post the complete error message here, please? It should be in Event Viewer (Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools, Event Viewer).

other then giving me a log of what goes wrong, absolutely nothing and now I've discovered I can't even uninstall the old version either because it brings up the uninstaller which is alot like the installer and looks for the same msi file.

Then all I can point at is the last bit of Installshield advice. Do also read the link at the bottom to the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Oh and try cleaning out any "corrupt" versions of BOINC with the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

Thank you, the clean-up utility did the trick.
