I noticed that the BOINC client occasionally fails to get a work unit that was assigned to it. I also know that enabling the global resend of lost work units on a project would also drive up the database utilization. I have a possible compromise: add an option in the BOINC client to request a work unit resend? Normal updates would not drive up the database utilization by skipping the work unit resend. However, an attentive user who detects a missing work unit would click "Request lost tasks" would cause the database to look for and resend missing work units. |

The goal of BOINC is to be as easy as possible for the users. Another button in the manager would just complicate things. A lot of users just press buttons and don't know what it does or how it stresses a project. If a project wants to speed up things and allow resends it has to live with the additional DB stress or find a better way that doesn't involve user interaction. |

There is/was code in place where a double reporting of a result causes 'resent lost tasks' to be activated for that scheduler contact, Jason G did a Boinc 6.10.58 clent where that ability was exploited at Seti, this goes back a year or two when they were still on the bandwidth limited hurricane link, DA turned off 'resent lost tasks' thinking it would improve database load, but it made it worse because clients were loosing hundreds of tasks, DA produced this half way house to try and keep lost tasks in check, i think it was a partial success, Claggy |
