I'm a new user, running version 5.4.9 on Windows XP with a dialup modem and Zone Alarm. I can't seem to persuade BOINC to dial the modem. My preferences include Confirm before connecting to Internet? no Disconnect when done? yes and other programs successfully dial up without asking. (For example, if I'm not connected and I open IE and try to go to a website, the modem dials.) On the BOINC manager messages tab I get repeated messages like 5/25/2006 10:53:47 PM|Einstein@Home|Started download of file skygrid_1190_z_T01.dat 5/25/2006 10:53:48 PM|Einstein@Home|Temporarily failed download of skygrid_1190_z_T01.dat: http error 5/25/2006 10:53:48 PM|Einstein@Home|Backing off 1 minutes and 0 seconds on download of file skygrid_1190_z_T01.dat I've set Zone Alarm to allow access for the BOINC client, manager, and screensaver. (One weird thing: even when I'm not connected, both inbound and outbound "traffic" indicators flash on the Zone Alarm icon in my system tray.) When I'm already connected, downloads and uploads work just fine. What do I need to do to fix this? Daniel |

I'm a new user, running version 5.4.9 on Windows XP with a dialup modem and Zone Alarm. I can't seem to persuade BOINC to dial the modem. My preferences include Did you save the changes with the button on the site and update BOINC after setting these preferences? But it could be a timing problem, seeing your log: 5/25/2006 10:53:47 PM|Einstein@Home|Started download of file skygrid_1190_z_T01.dat I doubt your modem can dial in within one second. I'll ask the developers about this. (One weird thing: even when I'm not connected, both inbound and outbound "traffic" indicators flash on the Zone Alarm icon in my system tray.) This is somewhat normal behaviour. Since 5.4.9, the boinc daemon and boinc manager talk to eachother each second, to provide real time refreshing of the Tasks list. This isn't internet traffic, just local traffic on port 31416. The only reliable work around to this is to uninstall BOINC and reinstall it as a service, then you're able to exit the Boinc Manager, while Boinc continues to run in the background. |

I'm a new user, running version 5.4.9 on Windows XP with a dialup modem and Zone Alarm. I can't seem to persuade BOINC to dial the modem. In the BOINC Manager Activity tab make sure Network activity based on preferences is selected. I see the same behavior if Network activity suspended is selected. You should exit and restart Manager if you make this change. |
