Although I have tried to join in with this very important research I am failing because I'm too much of a novice! I keep getting the message that the URL i supplied was not correct. What is a URL?

URL = Uniform Record Locator
It's what is in the long thin 'window' at the top of your browser.

As to the url in which you're interested, to which project do you want to attach?
There're dozens.
If you look at the main page for this site, (there's a link at the bottom of this page), you'll see some at the top left. If you position your mouse pointer over the names, you can see the URL on the left side of the bottom line of your browser. If you click on one, you'll go to that site.

“Uniform Resource Locator”, better known in common parlance as an Internet address. BOINC identifies individual projects by the domain names of their servers, which a user must enter in the course of attaching a computer to a project. Which one were you trying to join? Could you copy & paste a few lines from the message log, so we can see the context in which you're getting the error?

here is one or two that you can use...remember to use them complete with all characters...

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/
http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/
http://xw01.lri.fr:4320/
http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/

each line is a url...
first one is seti second is einstein, third is xtremlab and fourth is rosetta...
if you look you shall see "http://" do not forget this, and all the characters that make up the url...
i hope you remember your password and what email you used, as you will need these for each project you have an account with, if you have no account then with most of them you can use new datails to create one...
one i know of requires you to create an account first, and use an account key..that is WCG, (world community grid)..so try another first till you get confident and then read a bit to learn how to log to these types, if they are what you wish to crunch..
best of luck and enjoy the projects...
