Hello,

I have the current version of BOINC installed to run under an unpriviledged account. BOINC automatically starts running when I restart my machine.

This is causing a problem because I frequently do O/S work/testing that requires frequent reboots. I would like BOINC to NOT start automatically and would like to be able to start it when I want it to run.

Before I start experimenting with this and possibly screw something up, would I untick the "Run Manager at Login?" box in the BOINC manager options, just as I would do for a regular BOINC installation?

And, when I want to start BOINC, do I just double-click the BOINC icon?

Thank you.

Ok, I didn't hear from anyone so I tried unticking the "Run Manager at Login" box and rebooted. After rebooting, the manager didn't start, but my BOINC tasks were started up again under the unprivileged account "boinc_project".

Is there any way to prevent them from automatically starting when you are configured to run BOINC under an unprivileged account, and if so, a way to start them when you want them to run?

Either install BOINC in non-service mode or set the BOINC service startup mode to manual.

Until you're told us a few things about your system, which OS, which Boinc version, if it's Windows, what kind of installation did you do, if it's Linux, then where you got it from, it'll be hard to give you you an answer, hence no replies:

Claggy,

Sorry - my bad.

Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
Boinc Version 7.0.64 (x64)
mxWidgets Version 2.8.10
Installation: Protected application execution; all other options were left at default values.
Currently running Climateprediction.net models

Does this give enough information?

Thanks.

The whole point of 'Protection application execution' (aka 'service mode') installation is that it causes BOINC to run 'as a service' - i.e. with any, every, or no user logged in to the console.

If you want to have 'per user' control of BOINC's behaviour, you would need to install it in user mode. Even then, an un-priviledged user account will have difficulty managing settings like this: if that user never wishes BOINC to run when he or she is busy, the surest way would be for an administrator to set

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Manager]
"DisableAutoStart"=dword:00000001

in the registry for that user account.

Be aware that your CPDN models would never make further progress except when that user logs out and another user logs in.

Richard,

Ok, I understand.

To keep things simple, when these CPDN models finish, I will re-install BOINC so that it runs in user mode.

Thanks.
