That means that your data directory changed. Check the data directory path in the installer. Third screen in, Advanced, second path. Is it going to the right place? If it isn't, adjust it.

I have BOINC installed in a non-default path of D:\apps\BOINC and the data at D:\apps\BOINC\data

The 7.9.x and 7.10.x installers aren't honoring the existing install paths, they're using the default C:\Program Files... paths.

When I re-install 7.8 it sees my custom paths on D:\apps\... again -- no manual intervention needed.

I suspect the newer installers aren't parsing the registry correctly to find the current install paths.

That certainly would explain what you're seeing. I use D:\BOINC for programs, and D:\BOINCdata for data, and so far it hasn't been a problem for me. The only difference between us is that you have one folder as a sub-folder of the other, but I don't see why that should suddenly have become a problem.

You mentioned that you used the Win x64 installer for 7.10.2 Can you confirm that you also used the x64 version of 7.8.3? And did you explicitly uninstall the old version yourself, or just let BOINC handle it for you? Just trying to get a picture of exactly what steps you went through. Oh, and are you using a service install or an ordinary user install?

Yes, the way I know that happens is when you switch from a 32bit client to a 64bit client, or vice versa, while you never had the other installed before.

Yes. I only run Win x64 clients and I don't do a service install.

I always let the installer overwrite the previous install without adjusting the paths.

This has only happened once before but it was a long time ago and it was between major versions. I suspect it's a similar cause.

As for the registry, I see that there are multiple reg keys with different paths and that may be cruft from the longevity of me testing client releases. It may be a worthy goal of the installer to either clean up or detect older/conflicting reg keys as I don't think it cleans up properly after a full uninstall.

I always had that problem when I changed the data directory from the C:\ drive to a ramdisk (e.g., Z: drive). Even if I uninstalled BOINC first, it would want to use an old path. I had to go into the registry and hack out all the references to BOINC to be safe.

I haven't done it for a while, so I can't really speak about the current version and what it is doing, but it persisted over several versions and years as I recall.

A new version of the BOINC client (7.12.0) is ready to test. Please help us by doing the tests described here:
https://boinc.berkeley.edu/alpha/test_matrix.php and reporting the results here: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/alpha/test_form.php

Release notes for 7.12 are here: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Release_Notes_for_BOINC_7.12

It's important to test that auto-attach to account managers works. The instructions for this have changed slightly; follow them carefully. If you have any questions about this test, post to this list or email me personally.

Thanks -- David

Thanks to everyone for testing 7.12.0.
Testing revealed a bug that affects only Windows, and only the autoattach feature.
I made a 7.12.1 for Win that should fix this.
If you're on Win, please test autoattach again using this.
If this checks out I'll make this the recommended version.
