Hello,

A few days ago I installed BOINC on my computer (Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome UI) using the Ubuntu Sotware Center.

At first the program behaved correctly, doing work in my absence, and completing several tasks.

Yesterday I noticed my computer slowing down considerably. On checking with the System Monitor, the Resources graph looked more or less like a heart beat monitor: for 2-3 seconds both processors would run at 100%, then drop back for less than 1 second to 20-30%.

However, there were no (visible) Processes using that much processor time. After excluding other possibilities, I uninstalled BOINC, and my problem was solved.

If someone knows a solution, I would be glad to re-install BOINC.

Thank you for any help.

Hans

That's how "CPU share" works. What was your problem again?

I'm counting for science,
points just make me sick.

@whynot,

The idea is that BOINC becomes active, whenever the screen saver is activated.
Unfortunately, after two days, BOINC became active ALL THE TIME. That's not what it's supposed to do.

No. it's not. It's already been reported to the developers that the idle tracking has broken again. On various distros including Ubuntu.

This is killing me on Windows XP 32-bit with a quad core processor and 4 GB RAM.

I'm going to have to kill BOINC on this computer until there is a fix.

Pity because I've been with the project for > 14 years.

I doubt that, the first post here is from 2002, and the first users all joined in 2005, while the first Boinc projects date from 2005 and 2004, with Boinc Beta a bit before that, so really you can only have been involved in Boinc for about 10 or 11 years Max,
while your join date here is 29 May 08, that is only 5 years ago.

The problem here is about Linux idle detection not working, not the one in Windows not working. It is working in Windows 7, I've got it working here without problems, even on the present alpha 7.1.1

If you do not have anything working, you will have to tell us in detail what your problem is, what you have done to remedy it thus far, how come you see it as a problem etc. (Which I see you've done, piggy-backing onto an old thread)
