Hi all -

as recommended by BOINC I updated to 7.0.64.
Now BOINC does not start as a normal user and gives the message: Wrong password.
As Administrator there is still no problem to start BOINC, but I don't want to change the start to "as Administrator" because I am then always forced to give in the administrator password.

What password is meant?
Why does such an update change my rights?
How can I manage to start BOINC as a normal user without giving in a password?

I am frustrated because it already costed me much time to find out that I don't know anything and what to do.
My home system is Windows-7 and 64bit.

Look for the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file in the BOINC data directory, which default on Windows contains a 32 character hash value. Normally on local device, you dont need the password to connect BOINC Manager to the core client. Just when selecting computer, enter 'localhost' as host name, leave the pw field blank and OK.

P.S. Default when installing BOINC, only the one who installed BOINC has connection rights. To overcome failure to connect in present condition, uninstall and install again, making sure to tick the 'Allow all users' in the Advanced installer screen. To get there, there's an 'Advanced' button right bottom in the 2nd installer screen.

thanks for your intention to help but I had no success.
File gui_rpc_auth.cfg does not exist on my computer with BOINC installed! Could it be that this file only exists on a Linux computer?

Now, I deinstalled BOINC and reinstalled it again. When installing the new version 7.0.64 again the option "for all users" is by default set. But as a user, BOINC did not work. The message: "Boinc is not connected to a client."

Now I tried to reinstall Version 7.0.28 as administrator. Inspite of setting "for all users" in the advanced window, BOINC nevertheless did not work with the above message. As user I now installed BOINC above the available installation and answered "Repair". Now, BOINC worked as a user.

Well, I deinstalled version 7.0.28 and tried this method with version 7.0.64 but BOINC did not work as user.

Again, I deinstalled version 7.0.64 and tried to install version 7.0.28 again. This time the Repair did not work!
Now I have no running BOINC besides the possibility to start it as admin which I don't want.

I would be glad if someone has another hint.

The file, gui_rpc_auth.cfg, exists on *all* BOINC installs, it being a first if there would not be one. Opposed to Windows where the file contains a 32 character long [FAIK] random hash value, certainly the Linux Repos I've been using have had the file too but with a zero length password. The file is an essential part of the BOINC base security, and as I noted is in the BOINC data directory [BDD], which default on Win7-64 goes to C:\ProgramData\BOINC [possibly hidden]. The stdoutdae.txt log file would contain a line near the start, where the actual BDD is.

The 'Allow All User' on Windows has been working for most anyone, so all in all you're presenting a puzzle, the house experts will want to step you through in solving.

When you installed BOINC, did you install as a service? or was it installed without the service option selected?

sorry for the delay of my answer, and also for the fact that I do not know how
to answer. When installing in Windows-7 there seemed to be no option for an
installation as a server. I will deinstall and install again and then report.

For now, I have to excuse me for 4 days - I am travelling tomorrow. Thus, my
time today is rather restricted.
On Monday I will work hard to give answers. :-)

Not a server, but a service. It's there, third screen in the installer, click Advanced. The service option is the Protected Application Execution option.


So the question is, did you add a check mark on that option, or was it already checked? Or did you leave it unchecked and continued installing?

Ahum, the PAE descriptor was dropped in favor of 'Service' in the v7 installers, since we're discussing 7.0.64... think you were the most verbal in having that whole line fixed up. meanwhile I tried to solve my problem again though there is not much time.
I downloaded the BOINC software again from the BOINC page directly, deinstalled the old one and reinstalled the newly downloaded.
Now the BOINC directory exists in the ProgramData directory and gui_rpc_auth.cfg is seen! Obviously, my old download was disturbed.
As a user BOINC is still not running. :-(

For Jord: Sorry, for the mistake. Of course, I meant "service".

Nevertheless, I installed under "advanced" without a check mark in the "protected ..." line but with a check mark in "Allow all users ..."
and no check mark in the screen saver line.
BOINC is running fine as a administrator but as a user it is not able to connect to "Localhost" why ever.

Well, I have to stop until Monday.

now I am back from the travel and want to try to clarify my problem.
After deinstallation and reinstallation of version 7.0.64(64Bit) I found
gui_rpc_auth.cfg in the Boinc data directory. The hash value is contained.
Okay, but what to do with it?
When installing I went to "advanced" and checked only 'Allow all users' (no check on service!). I did not get a question to select a computer.
The installation was done as administrator and later again as a user. In any case the user did not get in. As a user there was the message that BOINC can not connect to localhost.
As a user I tried to set the computer from the menu. Thus, I was questioned and gave in 'localhost' and no password. The result was the message: 'I am not authorized to administer the client'. Strange!
Could it be that the 64-bit version is more complicated then the devellopers thought? ;-)

I was having the exact same problem. I updated to 7.0.64 from 7.0.28 and now Boinc only shows the project I'm running when I'm logged into my admin account, not my limited user account. I rebooted my PC and then I got the message saying I needed to add my limited user to the boinc_user group in order to administer this account. I went to my admin account, did this, and rebooted my PC again. When I went into my limited user account I once again received the message saying my password was incorrect. I found the file gui_rpc_auth.cfg in the Boinc data directory and changed the file name to gui_rpc_auth.old . I clicked on Advanced - Do Network Communication and got the message about The password being incorrect again. I noticed a new gui_rpc_auth.cfg file had been created that has a different hash value than the old gui_rpc_auth.cfg file.

Now here's how the problem was resolved. I went back into my admin account and opened the BOINC Manager. I had seen a post saying to detach and reattach the project I was running. I clicked on Tools - Add project or account manager and added a new project instead. Now I'm showing two projects running. I logged off my admin account and went back to my local user account. When I opened the BOINC manager it showed both projects running. I'm not sure what's going on but I'm assuming that adding the new project caused something to be updated so that my limited user account would show the project running.

when I saw your message I had the hope that the problem could now be 'solved'.
I added a new project as administrator with no problems. I logged off my admin account and logged in as the user. No success, the same problem.

Moreover, your manipulations with gui_rpc_auth.cfg did not work. No new gui_rpc_auth.cfg was created. Strange.

Now, there is one question: How did you add your user to the boinc-user group?
I have no idea where to do this. Clearly as the admin but how?
May be that this is the critical point.

Meanwhile, I deinstalled BOINC and are waiting for the BOINC devellopers.
Hope, they will find the BOINC failure.

Could you type the following command from a command line in the c:\programdata\boinc directory:

cacls .


and these commands as well:

net localgroup boinc_admins

net localgroup boinc_users

And post the output!

You can either copy the output from the command line box, by right-clicking on it and selecting Mark, then use the cursor keys to go up/down/left/right to the text, and while holding SHIFT, to select the text, then press Enter to copy the text to clipboard, before posting it in an answer here (right-click -> Paste, or CTRL + V).

Or you can make the command line post the output to a text file, which you can then open with Notepad.
To do so, do the following:

cacls . > c:\temp\cacls-output.txt

and
net localgroup boinc_admins > c:\temp\boinc-admins.txt

and
net localgroup boinc_users > c:\temp\boinc-users.txt


These commands can be done from a command line, or from the Run-menu.
