Not sure what the problem is with a 4th (older model) computer that I'm attempting to set up with BOINC -- have attempted repeatedly to attach to either the SETI or Einstein projects without success over the past 2 weeks at different times of day or days of the week. I always end up with a message that says the project is "temporarily unavailable". The log in BOINC manager from today's effort is pasted below FYI -- hopefully it will provide fodder for someone to offer advice. The OS on this machine is Windows 2000 SP4, and I'm running ZoneAlarm v6.1.744 with the BOINC client, manager and screensaver program controls set to "Allow". I can see from the DUN connectoid's system tray icon that there is communication going on after I kick off the "attach to project" command, but the end result is always the same. I have had no difficulties on the other 3 machines, 2 running XP Pro SP2 and the 3rd Win2k SP4. All four machines are running BOINC v5.4.5. What's the deal? Here is the BOINC manager log message block: 05/02/06 12:33:29||Starting BOINC client version 5.4.5 for windows_intelx86 05/02/06 12:33:29||libcurl/7.15.3 OpenSSL/0.9.8a zlib/1.2.3 05/02/06 12:33:29||Data directory: C:\\Program Files\\BOINC 05/02/06 12:33:31||Processor: 1 GenuineIntel x86 Family 6 Model 3 Stepping 3 265MHz 05/02/06 12:33:31||Memory: 127.55 MB physical, 303.06 MB virtual 05/02/06 12:33:31||Disk: 7.01 GB total, 867.00 MB free 05/02/06 12:33:31||No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults 05/02/06 12:33:31||Local control only allowed 05/02/06 12:33:32||Listening on port 31416 05/02/06 12:33:32||This computer is not attached to any projects 05/02/06 12:33:32||Visit http://boinc.berkeley.edu for instructions 05/02/06 14:44:44||Fetching configuration file from http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/get_project_config.php 05/02/06 14:45:46||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site 05/02/06 14:45:53||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site |

Boinc 5.4.5, if able to install, had problems. It is a test version, not a true release client. Please try the last client (5.4.7) which may become a release client, first. Also, at this moment, Seti has it's weekly outage (Tuesdays, 17:00 - 23:00 UTC) so you may not be able to attach. And furthermore, are you using a proxy of sorts? |

Boinc 5.4.5, if able to install, had problems. It is a test version, not a true release client. --------------------- No proxy, and I wasn't aware that v5.4.5 was a beta or test release -- on booting up one of the other machines some weeks ago, a BOINC message screen informed me I was using an old version (v4-something) and I should upgrade, so I downloaded the latest release and installed it on the 3 machines then active w/o problems. As I have a very slow dial-up connection, I simply used that file version to install on this 4th machine. I'll d/l the newer version and try it -- will post back the outcome (probably tomorrow). Thanks for the heads-up. Jim |

The latest actual recommended version of BOINC is only 5.2.13 You can get it from the download site We've been testing 5.3.1 to 5.3.31 versions and then went into testing the 5.4.x release client for a while now. 5.4.7 is the latest, but as I said it may only be a release client. It depends on what the alpha testers still find as problematic. So if you don't mind, go back to 5.2.13 for now. Although I must warn that the 5.4.x client is imminent. Yet since I don't work for Berkeley, who releases the BOINC versions, I can't say when exactly. |
