HI thanks for answering my question earlier. Now i notied that certain prorams won't run no matter what i try. It says i meet the requirements. I can currently run or have run seti@home, Einstein@home, & Rosetta@home. So far I haven't been able to rune Opreject@home & Asteroids@home. Is there certain projects that volunteers can't run? and if so how can I tell which projects I can participate in. Sorry if this is kinda of a stupid question but i'm still learning. any feedback would be appreciated. thanks

Hi jc

How are you trying to join these projects? I don't know about OProject@home but because of your question I've just tried joining Asteroids@home. I have immediately joined and received running tasks.

There are a few projects that are only for volunteers with lots of experience; these are mostly alpha or beta projects and are often by invitation only. But most projects are for everybody. To join, in your BOINC Manager's Tools menu click on Add project then select the new project you want from the list. Then follow the instructions in the joining wizard. Both of the projects you are interested in are in that list.

Hi jc,

The only thing I can think of with Oproject is the BOINC client version. Are you running a new enough version?

With Asteroids, I don't know. I've never had any difficulties with it, though I'm not crunching it at the moment.

How are you joining the projects? Via the BOINC manager/client or via the project websites?

Cheers,

Al.

I can add the projects but for some reason those 2 so far wont' start running tasks. It says it is but stays at 0% progress for days. I have no problem running some other projects just those 2 so far: Oproject and asteroids at home.

OK, I thought you hadn't managed to join these projects but you obviously have and you've also got tasks so there isn't really a problem except that the tasks from these projects haven't started yet.

Whether particular tasks run is decided by a piece of the BOINC program called the scheduler. It decides which tasks must run when. The aim of the scheduler is to make sure that all the tasks finish before their deadline and over the longer term to keep as close as possible to the proportion of the computer's time you have decided to devote to each project. These proportions per project can be seen in your BOINC Manager Projects window in the Resource Share tab. If every project has a share of 100% then each will in the medium - longer term get equal shares of crunching time. If you want to divide the computer's crunching time differently you do it in your account for each project. If you want to devote less crunching time to a certain project you could reduce its share to say 60% or 25%.

Yes, sometimes particular tasks can be made to wait for many days by the scheduler. But the scheduler almost always gets things right so you can just leave it to do its own thing in its own way.

Just make sure that in the Tasks tab none of those waiting tasks have been accidentally suspended; that would prevent them from ever starting.
