Boinc manager 7.0.28 wont connect on one machine running windows 7. I have two gaming rigs, one with windows 7 64 bit that Boinc runs on just fine and the other one Boinc was running on just fine until three days ago.

I can get it to work if I downgrade to version 5 or 6 but any version 7 will not work. Also on this rig I have a partition with windows 8 on it and boinc runs fine on that partition. So it runs fine on the other windows box and the other partition but on this install when I try to run it it just says...

"Retrieving current status" or in advanced view "connecting to localhost"

Add both boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe as exceptions to your firewall.
boincmgr.exe and boinc.exe require access to TCP port 31416
boinc.exe separately requires internet access on TCP ports 80 and 443.

When using Windows firewall, you don't have to set the port numbers, just allow them on the Home/Private network.

I tried this and my problem is not resolved.

Their are other threads on this same/similar problem that are also unresolved is it possible their is a design flaw with version 7?

Is their any registry changes I could make?

It works on my machine, Windows 7 64bit Ultimate with even BOINC 7.0.48 (latest alpha).

Could it be a design flaw? Nah, for then hundreds, if not thousands of people are on here yelling at us that it doesn't work. Thus far, it's only you. So it's something local, on your machine. And you even prove it, because it works on your one machine, but just not the other. So not a design flaw but really something local.

You'll just have to figure out what.
Hints: Anti virus, anti-malware, (as already suggested firewall), some update that your one computer got but the other didn't, a driver that's in the way, you having changed some piece of hardware (like a videocard) but you neglected to uninstall the old drivers for the hardware you took out. Etc.

Check in the stderr*.txt files in your BOINC Data directory for clues.
Check in the Windows Event Viewer for clues.

Those files are blank and the event viewer doesn't appear to have any noticeable incidents.

Well, if the log files are blank, at least the next thing won't hurt then.
Please uninstall BOINC.
Manually delete the BOINC Data directory. It'll be a hidden directory at C:\ProgramData\BOINC\

Now do something funny and get either 7.0.47 or 7.0.48 to test with.
Install any of these BOINC versions.

See what that does. You will have to reattach to any project you were part of, since as you deleted your data directory the connect files for that are now lost.

Oh and please, be as eloquent about what you do and see as you can possibly be, even if it means that you write down per step what you did. It's very difficult to diagnose your exact steps from one sentence of 15 words.

UnInstalled Version 7.0.28. Deleted hidden data folder. Rebooted.
Installed 7.0.48.
Issue persists.

Firewalls are off. I see nothing to point me to a problem. The event viewer shows almost no errors at all.
I see an error for: Session "Circular Kernel Context Logger" failed to start with the following error: 0xC0000035
and
Warning 2/9/2013 12:47:34 PM DNS Client Events 1014 None
and
Warning 2/9/2013 12:47:34 PM DNS Client Events 1014 None
none of those seem to be related to Boinc

I open Boinc manager and it just says "Retrieving current status"

Version 7 wont even let me attach projects, it is just on reconnecting to client...Retrieving current status. Advanced view says connecting to localhost.
I am not saying it is a software issue with version 7 but its is a software issue of something...windows, Boinc design oversight, some incompatible background software running somewhere. Even if it is not a widespread issue something very minor could be different in my registry or program layout or something that is causing this.

I am running avast free version and windows firewall. Operating system is windows 7 64 Ultimate.
I have a 2nd partition on this same machine running windows 8 with Avast and Boinc works fine. All my other hundreds of applications work fine. My windows 7 OS is fully patched.
Last time I tried version 6 it worked...I am probably going to try it again.

Bobklosak is not the only person with this kind of problem. I had a working version on my laptop but had a computer crash which could only be sorted by using my recovery disks to rebuild the software. I reinstalled BOINC on a user account with allow any user checked. Initially it worked but after the computer was shut down and restated (windows updates) it failed to connect to the localhost saying incorrect password. As this is a Windows7 home edition there is no facility to modify user groups as suggested on screen. Reinstalling has been carried out in both admin and user accounts with allow all users checked and in each case BOINC again gave a working version until the next computer restart when I am back with the incorrect password message. Currently BOINC will only work if I am logged in to my admin account and not a user account.

I have tried installing an earlier version but again BOINC only works in the user account until the next reboot.

It seems that the installation is not recognising the allow all users selection. Is there a configuration file where this can be amended manually?

Looks like I will just have to dream about using BOINC since I cannot get it to work properly.

It's worked fine on my same build for years until recently. So odd.

Same problem here, same OS (COMODO firewall and antivirus).

So I tried installing and old version, boinc_6.12.34_windows_x86_64, but it's more or less the same (sorry that I don't have a more precise testing to share):

everything ok upon installation, but if I exit the manager also stopping BOINC then when I launch it again the manager only sees two of 5 projects and no tasks (they had been recently downloaded and were there when I stopped it).

_Maybe_ I found a workaround with 6.12.34 (which didn't work with 7+):

Right button click on the Boinc Manager icon, properties, compatibility tab, I cheked "run as administrator".

If this proves to be unstable in the next days, I'll try setting compatibility to other Windows versions.

(I had previously set Boinc and Boincmgr as trusted applications in the Comodo firewall, but the problem persisted. I haven't tested undoing that so far, probably nothing would change since Boinc Manager is now launched with admin priviledges.)

Boinc Issues connecting to host.... What a headache that gave me.

This is what I found, I hope this helps you guys. Please note however that I am not a Tech in any sense of the word.

Applies to Windows VISTA (all flavors), Windows 7 (all flavors). I don't know if it applies to any other flavors since I don't use them and haven't bothered to look them up.

Cause of issues.....

AntiVirus -> sometimes reports a false positive because of next item... The 1 time I got this, I excluded BOINC as a trusted App.

Firewall -> Boinc will sometimes be blocked. I don't know why it is not consistent, but hey, I chalk it up to MISCROSOFT.... :) If I get this problem, I specify boinc as allowed in the settings.

Permissions -> The way Windows is now set up is with UAC (User Account Controle) for security against users doing something by mistake or through plain stupidity. To get around this in the HOME flavors of Windows which have no real policy editors you do the following.....

Log in as administrator. Make sure to exit boinc before going further if is loads automatically.
Click START button and type CMD in search.
Right click the CMD.exe that appears in the results to run as administrator (I know you are already logged in as admin. but do it anyways, otherwise you may get error 5 when you enter the commands in the window. in the following commands substitute USERNAME for the name of the account you wish to authorize to use and administer the BOINC software. Personal opinion is that theses 2 commands go against the idea of UAC, but who am I to question it...

net localgroup boinc_users username /add
net localgroup boinc_admins username /add

Reboot the machine to make sure everything is good.

This worked for me and I now have 2 computers crunching away. 1st computer is a WIN7 64 bit on AMD 8core, the 2nd is a VISTA 32 bit on intel DUO.

All this info was looked up and in many if not all cases repeated in the different project forums and discussion boards because many people have the same problem. I suggest you look it up yourselves to make absolutely sure this solution applies to you. All projects have forums and discussion groups filled with people who are knowledgeable and willing to help.

So good luck folks. Happy crunching.
