They're from all sorts of different people, from charities to who knows what - half the time, I say hello 3 times and nobody is there.

I've started to just say "YO" or "Yellow". Confuses their automated software.

I have my landline on permanent voice mail. If people leave a message I get a text on my mobile.

Most people who know me call my mobile anyway, and I get almost zero marketing or spam on that.

Occasionally I check the "callers who left no message" option and am glad I didn't have to answer them all.

If I could have internet without a phone line I might do that, but where I live I cannot get cable!!

My mobile number is plastered over my website and Facebook page for my aromatherapy practice but I still end up with less spam on it than the landline.

Since changing providers, 3G (I can get 4G in central Cambridge but not at home) is as fast as my ADSL, sometimes faster. Only trouble is going for unlimited bandwidth on mobile would cost too much.

You guys are lucky over there. We get plenty of spam calls on the cell number. Talk to TimeLord.

Well, soon enough the scams from India and the Philippines will find out how to dial your numbers, then watch out.

I wonder if it is to do with the fact that your cell numbers are linked to your local codes, so are basically the same as a landline to a spammer.

Over here a new code group was created that is totally different to the local code groups

So for instance in the USA if your home number was (212) 555 xxxx you mobile may well be the same, so much so that I have called my sister (who lives in Hanover PA) on the wrong number because both are so similar.

Here in the UK my home number is 020 8680 xxxx and my mobile is 07988 xxxxxx, all mobiles have an 07 prefix

Hopefully no spammers actually read the posts here as I just gave the game away.

I don't normally get a lot of spam calls. Some days go by and the phone doesn't ring at all. In any event, my cell is strictly an emergency item. I use my land line for regular day to day phone conversations. I'm a nostalgic old curmudgeon, anyway; I like keeping the land line since it's been the same number at the same house for over 50 years.

That might help, if we did that, but here people can take their old landline number, say their parents, and put in on a cell phone just to keep it in case long lost persons call.

Of course the GDPR you all have likely helps a lot, here they just trade your personal info around for less than a penny a person and it is off to the Philippines or India for those zero cost VOIP calls.

It never occurred to me that I could turn my landline number into a cell phone. If I could do that at my current land line rate of $20 a month for unlimited calling, and no cost for the actual cell phone itself, it would be worth a thought, but I really like my home's telephone handset, and have never liked the feel or sound of cell phones.

I'm right there with you, having had the same number here for 38 years. I also like my speakerphone, the one wall-mounted in the bathroom, and the DECT wireless satellites in the basement, garage and garden shed. Can't do most of that well on a cell. Not to mention dragging it around, forgetting to plug in the charger, etc.
What I hate are the robocalls, especially on the cell. I just leave the cell forwarded to the landline, and have the ll set up with NoMoRoBo, which handles most of that well. And since the ll is Vonage, if I go somewhere for an extended period, I could take the Vonage box and a small phone long or the ride if I wished.

The Seti BETA crunchers will all soon need a place to post, no work in forever and RAC's are falling below the post limit.

I don't think there is a RAC post limit on Beta.

We're dropping like flies.

I think I'm next. This Tuesday outrage coming - it's my nose against an outside surface glaring in... at the survivors.

You might want to extend your holiday, just in case...

I can't. Everything's going into overdrive now, as the house has been sold and it now really needs to be empty ASAP. Of course now my brother's gone on vacation. But at least he's closer by than he had originally planned. France for Thailand.

Yesterday I emptied the fridge and freezer, then disconnected it from power. Came back 7 hours later to find the freezer still full of ice. Good insulation! So I opened the door, put two microfiber cloth down and hope for the best, will check on that this morning.

I'll then also take down the lamps I had planned to take with me.

Yes, but only in the cafe.
You can post in technical threads with zero RAC.

Oh that's much closer but still not quite there though, defrosting the freezer. I hope he's back soon, Jord to help.

The freezer is defrosted. The two microfiber cloth had soaked a good bit of the water, but there was still a puddle under the fridge/freezer combo, so I moved that whole thing to elsewhere in the kitchen and mopped the floor. Have left the doors of the fridge/freezer open so they can naturally get rid of their moist.

I was already wondering how else you would report problems with apps/tasks if you hadn't managed to run any of them correctly and were a first poster there. But thanks. :)

Last such post in Beta was in 2016.

Jord's vacation should be over so it is appropriate to make sure he is awake in time for tomorrow's outage.
