Message 95095 - Posted: 15 Jan 2020, 5:32:39 UTC - in response to Message 95094.

Anyone still sober and or still awake?

It is almost 2130 in the evening at Berkeley and SETI is still down!

This Super Duper Massive Grand Mal Outrage is going to be one to remember for the recent history books.

I do believe we are heading for a classic outrage!

31F and snowing fairly hard in this corner of the upper left coast. I'm going to bed and hope I don't lose electricity.

15 hours.
A fantastic outrage :-)

Actually, it's closer to 21 hours now, if you consider the fact that it basically quit handing out work ~6 hrs before maintenance began ~0500 PST.

. . Yes. that is a good point, my caches were all down even before the actual outage began. So now it is approaching 24 hours without being able to get any fresh WUs.

13 plus hours of outrage makes things a DOUBLE OUTRAGE!

Time to break out the heavy stuff in celebration of the DOUBLE OUTRAGE Line Aqavit from the old country.

Anyone care for a shot or two?

Finished my bottle from Aalborg some years ago but then haven't been to Denmark since 81 so perhaps not surprising. Will try a double shot of whisky in my next honey and lemon to see if it knocks cold on the head as well as the outrage.

Gone 1am in Berkeley - I don't think it's coming back until this evening. Time to fire up the backup projects.

I will go up a bit on the Einstein leader board as it crunches away on both Seti boxes.

Get all your GPU's over there, out of the 66 tasks I have completed so far, 44 of them don't have a wingman yet.

Rum's the thing for colds. And forget the honey and lemon.

Honey and lemon is endorsed by by NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) NHS guidelines.

As to rum vs whisky I have been unable to find any peer reviewed studies on either.

Closest I got was below from the BMJ

British Medical Journal archives have a study where a group of consultants were asked in a blind tasting to distinguish between single malt and blended whiskeys. They were unable to do so however the following issue contained criticism of the research on the basis that the single malts chosen where neither the best nor particularly distinctive.

The original researchers agreed with the criticism but stated that their budget did not run to the better more distinctive single malts and asked if anyone was prepared to give them a research grant.

Maybe they are replacing the hard disks. And something hiccuped?

Ok, Ok. I still had some Seti-Beta cpu tasks left so I lifted the processing limit on them.
My #2 project is World Community Grid so I switched it to "maximum" production (its a cpu-only aggregator). And then I went to the E@H website and turned off everything that was cpu-based (at least in the title) so my poor gpus will get something.

Looks like the system is fully committed...

If you want to try something "different" on your cpu's try: https://join.worldcommunitygrid.org?recruiterId=1027297&teamId=4WZJMC7X02
I recommend that if/when you want WCG to play nicely with Seti@Home you use the custom setting and limit the tasks down to 4-8 per project. Then set a maximum_concurrent_tasks(sp?) to the # of threads you are willing to devote to it.
The link causes you to be registered as "my recruitment" but otherwise should jump you directly in there.

Tom

Well the radio silence on their part is not encouraging.
They should also really update that scheduled weekly outage of 3-4h to something more realistic.

I have a suspicion they are having another try at the upgraded database software that cause so many problems with the anonymous platform just before Christmas. In any case, with all the large crunchers out of work, the recovery is going to be one for the ages.

Although we have one report of a fix (working at LHC-dev), I'd be surprised if they tried it with the database in this state.

But I've been surprised before.

Clearly, either something very big or very bad is happening...or perhaps both. Anyway, over to Einstein I am.
