I am suggesting that if today's outage continues much longer more hair will be burnt and the howling at the moon will resume.

. . Just think of the money you are saving on power bills (unless you have to now turn on a heater).

. . So those of us saving resources could invest them in a sweep, the closest to the time it comes back wins.

From Parkes:

2018OCT Observing Schedule Release Notes
CASS has recently been approached by NASA with a request to track the Voyager 2 spacecraft with the Parkes Telescope on a regular basis for the next 3-4 months
...
The requirement to mount the X-band ("Mars") receiver for this extended period will require removing the 21cm Multibeam receiver until March 2019

2019APR Observing Schedule Release Notes
At the start of the semester the telescope will be fitted with the 20cm multi-beam receiver (MB20) and the Ultra Wideband Low (UWL) receiver. This will be the receiver fit out until the VLBI run at the end of the semester
...
Breakthrough Listen: The agreement between the Breakthrough Foundation and CSIRO to use the Parkes Telescope to Search for Extra-terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) continues. The Breakthrough Listen program will be allocated 25% of Parkes observing time for five years commencing in 2016OCT. For the 2019APR semester this equates to 750hrs, plus approximately 225hrs of make up time for the impact of the Voyager 2 tracking programme in 2018OCT.

Made my first donation to seti in December, and I hope to make it a yearly thing now.

I can only hope they put the parkes data on a separate system, that has a different maintenance day, so people can flip/flop between the two projects. I'm only running one slow machine, so I should be good here until Monday with seti, but I really hope it comes back up today.

2016??, we haven' seen any data at all from Parkes, so where is the data that should start to flow in 2016??
All of that should be available from Listen - Breakthrough Initiatives, but I've never found it there and I haven't got time to look now - Jord is hungry!

Edit: Almost 32 hours downtime now.

. .Actually we have. Eric (and others) posted about it and that they were making tweaks in the file format to keep things uniform. But it has yet to appear in main. Still waiting but not holding my breath (no really, it's just asthma).

It appears that the cause is a hardware fault, possibly bad RAM on the database server. Obviously the project has to to be shut down for this, as this server controls just about everything and otherwise there would be the possibility of corrupting the science database badly, which would wreck the entire project.

It was indicated that if the problem can't be isolated today, we may throw together an impromptu fundraiser and buy some new hardware to prevent this from happening in future. Either way, the out(r)age should end soon.

I have already announced a FUN raiser at the Cafe: Seti

That's right, we can raise our "FUN" by donating to the Seti@Home project

:^)

Actually I am serious about more donations, but I have this awful itch to generate puns....
