It's like magic, I declared an outrage and it came back. After this place went 404 - not even a down page. |

2019-02-06 3:10pm EST - "On Tuesday the 5th a solution to the problem was found and the network team began to restore service to the failed router. As of 7:00pm last night all network connections have been resolved and after 12 hours of monitoring the system is stable." http://systemstatus.berkeley.edu/incident/detail?i=18178 |

I've compared notes with Eric and Jeff in the SETI lab. According to my logs, the upload problems we were suffering yesterday cleared at 02:08 UTC this morning. They saw the same message as "At 6:10pm [PST] on Tuesday the 5th..." - which is the same time, within a couple of minutes. So it seems that Bruno's woes were indeed related to the Campus IST issue, and were solved by replacing the failed router. |

No problems accessing the Net, but keep getting "this page can't be displayed" for Seti. Beta still spinning its wheels. Oops, while editing, Beta stopped spinning & up. :-) Beta is hellishly slow in accessing. Wouldn't be at all surprised if that went down. Beta now down. |

Well it was up for all of five minutes. Enough to read the Front page about losing Georgem and all the download workunits on it. Now the website has gone missing again. Going to be a very rough "second Tuesday" recovery. |

Getting work again slowly. Was forced into 24 hour backoffs on the hosts because of the high error count from around 200 permanent download errors on the tasks that were on Georgem and queued for my hosts. Manual updates started the scheduler clock on them again after they downloaded the master file. Hope the project can get back to running normally for the weekend. |

It is late Monday afternoon on the snowy upper left coast and we have an outage to look forward to which will cause the mods to awaken. |

to use a real wouff hongWhat an incoherent page is that, totally not explaining what a Wouff Hong is. Then it's better to read the first link he points at, http://amfone.net/WouffHong/wouff.htm which says: It was in one of these stories, entitled "Rotten QRM", that T.O.M. blasted the gibberish he'd overheard in one particular QSO, citing as an example the words "wouff hong", which apparently was either a concocted abbreviation, or someone's poor attempt at sending. At the time of the articles T.O.M. did not know what a Wouff-Hong was, but he later adopted it as a disciplinary object with which to both flail bad operating practices and inflict punishment on the perpetrators. It is said that in the following era he had, tongue in cheek, proposed its use as an instrument of torture and discipline, to maintain decency and order in the ham radio community. |

Further down, it explains that T.O.M. was actually Hiram Percy Maxim, who Wiki identifies as He was the son of Sir Hiram Maxim, inventor of the Maxim Machine gun.which was "an instrument of torture and discipline", if ever there was one. |

It went down early probably in order to celebrate the blizzard the upper left coast just had. 35f at my house with almost 2' of snow, delightful conditions they are. |

I stopped by to say hi. I had a lovely vacation and missed the last two outrages and it seems a bunch of unplanned problems. After two weeks of no seti, my cache isn't full, so I hope this isn't too long of a shutdown, but after all the problems the system has been having, maybe it needs to be...sigh. I hope all of you with snow enjoy the stuff, so far it has only gotten really cold here (ok, not really cold by any one's real standard, but I live in the sunny south for a reason). It has only snowed here once in 18 years, and even then the kids could only make a few snowballs each after they scraped the cars and the yard. Time to catch up on chores and that mountain of laundry, and to get ready for the nerd convention this weekend. |

Interesting. My forays into the amateur radio world have all been UK based and I had never heard of the WouffHong. During my time in the forces I operated from both GB2RS AND VP1APC. The club call-sign where I learned was GM4AAF. Makes me want to get myself a nice little qrp rig again. - Could easily power one from a USB port. |

I heard seti was down, and TA DA... it was so, although I got detoured in between which is sort of good because it means one less wait before going home. Glad you had a nice time, unixchick. Welcome back! :) I had never heard of the WouffHong.No. Me neither. I thought I should look into it though, in the circumstances, and discovered there's also a Rettysnitch. And an Uggerumph... *frost eyeballs in betreger's snow* which looks the kind of hairy best not thought about really. Which is a bit late now. |
