Message 85998 - Posted: 24 Apr 2018, 21:46:44 UTC - in response to Message 85997.

Well, as long as it appears to be a common thing, I'm not going to worry about it. It just made me wonder if something was wrong.

Firefox now does this also, starting with 57 Quantum. Their explanation was that they gained significant performance improvement by having each tab now run as its own process. Sounds like they may have stolen that from Chrome ...

At least in Firefox you can turn that off.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste autos and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 preference to switch the value from true to false

At your next Firefox startup, it should run in the traditional way.

By the way, am I the only one having trouble loading pages here? I even have a warning that a secure connection could not be made at times.

And now uploads to Seti are stuck as well, although the forums over there are back -- and hyper slow loading.

That was a short outage, it looks like the grand mal outrages are the thing of the past.

Interesting you should ask, because I was having that issue with SETI, a couple days ago, but not BOINC.

I was going to say Web pages at Seti were very slow, but I find the same situation here.

Is there a common point?

The transatlantic cable, its endpoints, and the associated routers?

Sorry, I should have been more complete.
I had already checked that https://www.berkeley.edu/ opened very quickly.

Just had to wait several minutes for the forums to open. Last time that happened and I reported that to David, he said something about network congestion. Have just reported it again.

Update to Gary's link:

Description: UPDATE: Monday, April 30, 2018 10:17am – IST staff is aware of instability to the Palto Alto Firewall in the Earl Warren Data Center and are troubleshooting to determine the cause and work toward a resolution.
And Eric has made a News item:

The UC data center switched over to a new firewall this morning. Since then packets into and out of the data center have been suffering drops. The Data Center staff is debugging the problem, we'll probably be dropping packets until it's resolved.

Yes around 10:0 PM PST
Description: UPDATE: Monday, April 30, 2018 3:38pm – The firewalls have been stable since 11:40am this morning. Users may need to check/restart services that could have hung during the outage.
IST staff are still working on the root cause of this outage. This evening after business hours at 10:00pm, the network team will troubleshoot further to fully restore network services.

P.S. Deleted didn't upchuck all over BOINC land telling us how horrible UC Berkeley is. We must that the good with the bad.

And they seem to be making slow, but steady progress. Uploads have been horribly sticky all morning, but seem now to be working a lot better. And I can teach this board to post!

The good news is that once I've cleared the uploads, getting new work - AND downloading it - seems to be relatively easy. Looking forward to hearing the postmortem report.

Now that it looks like that problem might be fixed.

Description: UPDATE: Tuesday, May 1, 2018 1:59am – The firewall has been stable since 12:42am, services appear to be restored. The vendor will continue monitoring.

Plus I do not see any problems on the boards or uploading and downloading.

Isn't it time for the outrage?
