I went and found a toilet and gave that hand a thorough wash. There was no sign that the skin had been broken at any point, and there's been no sign of anything malign growing since Tuesday, which is when I took that picture - using my other hand to un-pocket the camera and aim it blind.

I meant more freshly dead and lightly fried insects. I've never had chocolate ones. Now I only pick on plants to chew on, a link isn't necessary, so you can stop worrying over it, Chris :)

I must say, when my pompholyx started, I did wonder whether I'd been run over by a darkly ironic turn of events, but as it wasn't my-save-the-birds-and-bats activities that were responsible, I wasn't :) I'm glad there have been no nasty eruptions, Richard. :)

If you're the rear end of an amphibian eating the rear end of an amphibian, then it would put you in the cannibalistic camp, most definitely. I have to agree.

Some nice recipes for meat lovers

The problem with veal though is milk, not meat. I could just stop there because it is - but I'll continue anyway :)

We adhere to some of the most humane practises in veal production there are, yet because so many of us in the UK thoroughly and completely disapprove of eating it, we consume the least, look down upon those that don't share our disapproval, and feel a sense of collective pride for sending our veal farming industry tottering precariously towards the edge of a cliff. What we haven't changed, and nor has mother nature, is that roughly half of calves born will not fetch the cost of feed at market because they're male. They do need feeding... they're taken from their mothers within hours of birth just like the females are (so that we can have their milk - and make our butter and cheese, our yogurts and cream ...) and if it makes economic sense to feed those that can then go on and give us more of what we want, it makes none at all to do the same for those that can't.

So some are slaughtered before they're barely a day old. Many are transported to Europe and turned over to less humane practises than we ourselves permit, but with a return of sorts for the exchequer and farmer. And the few that find their way to a table here in the UK (iwithout the trauma of being transported long distances to a more miserable fate elsewhere) it could be said - had a better life for it.

So I think, to really really properly disapprove of people eating veal, whilst refusing to eat it on principle ourselves, we do more harm than good if we don't also stop contributing to the problem that feeds it - our consumption of dairy products.

My problem with lobster I mentioned once in a post about Rocky Mountain Oysters (I think) ... at seti... and hasn't changed much.

Having had "proper farm veal" and the "factory veal" I can assure you that they are two very different meats. One is little more than a "chewy bland jelly" why the other has both flavour and texture. Neither is to my taste, but I'll let you work out which is which.

Annie, rocky mountain oysters are the first down payment those males make on their feed. Yes, to a dairy farmer males are waste, to a cattleman they are profit and females are waste.

Chris, we understand you are a rabid vegan. Vegetables have feelings too.
