At the back of my mind there is the memory of the three day outages, seem to remember for about 6 months the servers went down on a Tuesday and came back Friday.

Wonder how that would go down with the credit hounds now :-)

I have too admit with my low spec machines, they never even run out of GPU work, definitely not CPU!

Well of course with SETI currently off line I cannot get the info from there but I did find this on the UKBOINCTEAM forum;

Weekly Outage and Initial Catch Up
Every Tuesday morning (Pacific time) we begin a 3 day data distribution outage to focus on science processing and development plus any needed systems maintenance. The upload/download servers will be offline during this time. The web site (including the forums) will only be offline during the database maintenance and backup portion of the outage. On Friday, you may experience connectivity issues as the servers catch up with demand. 6 Aug 2010 19:07:50 UTC

Then of course there was the month long outage.

We've been offline for over a month to remodel our database servers. The bulk of this work is complete, and work is being distributed. Please note we may continue to bring servers up/down over the next few weeks (outside of regularly planned outages) as we wrap up the final stages of this major endeavor.

Seems like 2010 was not a good year.

I think that may have been one of the experiments aimed at getting the Ntpcker analysis to run - allowing those tools to have clear access to the science database without fighting for resources with the daily inflow of new results. But we'll have to wait until either the News or Technical News archives are searchable before that ghostly memory can be confirmed or refuted.

Ah yes, of course before that back in the classic days it would go down and be down for days to weeks at a time.

I don't understand why the credit whores get so upset with a little hiccup. I suspect that the extra hours are being used by DA for Nebula testing. Why? Seems like the day after the outrage he posts something to the Nebula board. Besides there is more data than we can crunch.

Now how soon before we see some i9 crunch boxes filled with GPU's?

As soon as they are available.

Some of those guys in NC are "dedicated"!

I just had a stray thought pop into my head about some french guy who said he worked for Intel, and scoffed when SETI introduced GPU crunching.

I believe he proclaimed a GPU would never be better at crunching than the latest Intel offering.

Wonder what ever happened to him :-)

Yes, indeed - François Piednoël and the skulltrails. Google found him on twitter - boasting this morning about 7.5 GHz. Same old François.

I reckon it's birds. They're a lot noisier this time of year. By 5am they've been singing for nearly two hours and short of bunging something in our ears, rolling around the bed thinking there's something wrong with the alarm clock can make waking earlier easier than we might want it to be. Once that's happened, starting the day's activities could happen any time from that moment onwards. What we might not know is that they've already been awake for a couple of hours trying to get back to sleep - to give us lot in Europe and elsewhere, a couple more hours of seti-ing. Perhaps. Maybe :)

Ah, I see he now sports a mod tag here as well as seti. That's fine with me. This should allow Jord to concentrate on technical support which he is so much better at.

I am so glad you approve after all the disparaging things you said about my recent posts here.

As to Jord I suspect he will still be around, certainly in the Politics thread.

I'm so glad someone finally noticed as I was waiting 24 hours before dropping the bomb-shell. :-)
I'm very glad Bernie said yes as I've had my eye on him for some time now. Having a mole inside the moderator team over at Seti pays dividend. Mwahahaha. errr, did I say that out loud?

edit: that was very bad English, starting all my sentences with 'I'..

Do you think that was wise to mention considering the outcry over the issue of Seti's moderation list debacle?

Despite popular believe that moderators everywhere communicate with each other via secret IRC channels, massive barbecue parties and Whatsapp groups, I wouldn't believe everything that's written. In this case I haven't got a clue what you're talking about. If it's not secret, care to enlighten me?

No disrespect intended but find that hard to believe, especially as it has already been mentioned on another thread on this board.

Jord, are telling us a person who was permanently banned from Seti for trying to take over the moderation there is now trying to do the same here at BOINC? As they say history repeats. At least DA will remember who and I'm sure give the proper weight to that person. Just a shame that any UNI resources will have to be wasted upon this, especially as some of them are my tax dollars.

Your mention of the moderation list debacle led me to believe it was actual, that there is one going on now. When the crap happened of the 30, I wasn't much on the Seti boards having left over the abuse Misfit and Fuzzy were throwing my way. I spent well over a year on here and other project forums, only returning one year later to find some greater crap had happened.

I haven't been in The Cafe over at Seti in absolute ages. Certainly haven't read any threads there since I stopped being a moderator, I merely pass by on posts when doing searches. So whatever happened in there, shrug, you can tell me anything and I will take it for face value. I'm not in the least interested what happens in there, not now, not ever. I do stand by my principle that I will never post in The Cafe again, hence why you won't see my condolences on friends we lost either.

As for the question, how permanent is permanent then?
You can just discuss why the person here finds my stance over someone else's banishment being revoked a problem, when his own permanent status was lowered to a couple of months and that not being a problem. :)
