Some points occur to me.
... is there a possibility that they could have a backup for Murae1? That comes online when Murae1 is down, and they just copy over the 10 hour outage data afterwards. Or is that just not doable?
Assuming the message stuff is running on Phbbs or similar, in which case it's all database-driven and the data may well reside on the regular database servers. Splitting that all off might be a bit of work. But it is pretty crazy to have the two that tightly tied together.

The good news is that there is now a shed load of GBT work in hand and all 7 GBT splitters are up and running. The bad news is that all our RAC's will start to go down!

Hopefully even the guys down under are getting their fill! As smoothly as things have been running the last couple weeks, I have to think behind the scenes someone has been doing a bit of work and, if so, thanks and kudos!

For the average machine with an approriate size cache, a 10 hour+ outage should not cause it to run out of work. A top end machine might do though to be fair. What seems to irk most people more than anything is the forums being off air for that amount of time. This thread was set up for those that still wish to talk to people at that time.

As far as I know Seti is the only Boinc project that is regularly off air for such a long time once a week, it never used to be, but there must be good reasons for it. Muarae1 runs the data-driven web pages, obviously the messages and web pages need to be backed up, is there a possibility that they could have a backup for Murae1? That comes online when Murae1 is down, and they just copy over the 10 hour outage data afterwards. Or is that just not doable?

It is possibly that as the web pages have some of your data in the ident col, with RAC >X being the most important, along with link to your profile for ident No. and PM's etc. that the Message boards have to off-line as well.

Hmm, after a lovely day out with family, a bit too fresh out there for my liking, but still a great day :-)

Settling down to a nice cuppa & logs into the boards. Oops, rather than reply instantly, stopped & thought. Is it possible? So did a fair amount of research which in some respects was beneficial, others not so.

How to answer, if any is needed & within the rules. What a quandary!

The way I see Internet forums is that one can communicate taking into account the rules of said forums. That being said, one will come up against those of opposing views & must accept the fact that most people have similar views on life but with variances as to how they are viewed. Most acceptable as if we all had the same views it would be a boring old world.

Problems crop up when some will not accept the fact that variances of view are out there. As the Americans are so fond of saying: "I may not like what you say, but I will defend your right to say it", some forget that fact & will continue in the same vain as normal. Fair enough let them continue. My action on this is to simply bypass/ignore which most of the time works.

Then that action hits a snag - one I've found most noticeable on Boinc forums, they take their vitriol to other boards & privately at that. That to me is unacceptable. So there are 2 ways to deal with that, place on filter or let them know that private communication is unacceptable.

Apparently, there was a ruckus on this board recently, the details I have no desire to know of. However, it was brought to my attention via another Boinc forum & privately. Due to the rules of these forums, I cannot mention any details. What I found surprising was the fact it came to me in the 1st place as back in 2015, it was stated that no private communication is acceptable, say what has to be said publicly (within the rules of course) or not at all.

It was a rant nothing more nothing less, so reiterated my desire for no private communication. That was on the 12th Jan this year. Imagine my surprise when I receive another only a short time ago. This time phishing for personal information - it was ignored & will remain so.

Yes I know what many will say, put on filter, but imho, that only makes a hash of threads :-(

Some time ago, a moderator made a suggestion. Thought about it, & thought it was a good idea, so the offer to chat over a pint or two was made - to date, this has not been accepted. Makes one wonder as to why not.

So, as I said, what a quandary.

Well now, when a big one like Amazon does an oopsie, it's a big one.
At 9:37AM PST, an authorized S3 team member using an established playbook executed a command which was intended to remove a small number of servers for one of the S3 subsystems that is used by the S3 billing process. Unfortunately, one of the inputs to the command was entered incorrectly and a larger set of servers was removed than intended.

Removing a significant portion of the capacity caused each of these systems to require a full restart. While these subsystems were being restarted, S3 was unable to service requests. Other AWS services in the US-EAST-1 Region that rely on S3 for storage, including the S3 console, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) new instance launches, Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) volumes (when data was needed from a S3 snapshot), and AWS Lambda were also impacted while the S3 APIs were unavailable.

I wonder what the team member will have to talk about at his/her next review, if he/she's still working there...
