Unless I am confusing my upbringing, I believe that the Catholic Church is ok with evolution. Sure it took them a couple of centuries to get there, but as far as I can recall, faith is considered to be compatible with science (...with all apologies to Galileo for having the misfortune to have lived in a time before the Catholic Church got more comfy-cozy with accepted science principles!)

Sure there are some religious fundamentalist sects, across many different religions, that involve quite literal interpretation of their holy scriptures, but I think the Catholic Church got over that quite some time ago.

As an agnostic Catholic, I'm not going to try to defend the religion, but I do believe Catholics are pretty ok and open-minded about science nowadays.

I think the Pope would be happy to entertain ET at the Vatican.

I would say that the news would give all of them a very hard time. They preach to the narrow minded, the blinkered, those that live by strict society codes, and those indoctrinated from birth, that God created the earth for mankind alone. We and we alone are gods children, so much so that he (not she) sent his only son to be crucified upon our behalf.

That's painting all religions and people of faith with a very broad brush.

I reckon the Pope is secretly quaking in his shoes thinking that discovery of ET means he's out of a job. I would also expect a big change from belief in Creationism to Evolution, and the realisation that Darwin was right all along.

Chris, I don't think you have a good grasp of Catholicism with that statement.

It seems I am upsetting people with my posts on religious matters and I hsve no wish whatsoever to do that. I am not bashing anyone's religion or their belief in it, I am in the 10% minority that doesn't have a faith. 90% of the world do follow a religion and it means much to them. I will reply to those who have commented by pm. I always said there are two things guaranteed to get people hot under the collar, politics and religion. And there I go sticking my head in the lions den. I should know better.

Just go rename the other thread "Politics and Religion", and you'll have it all covered:)

Firstly I'm not the owner of the thread Jim, and secondly my comments even if moved there have caused offence for which I am sorry for.

Hence the grin at the end of my comment :)
I revert to Tom Jennnings' (inventor of Fidonet back in the 80s) famous net rules:

1)Thou shall not be excessively annoying,
2)Thou shalt not be too easily annoyed!

Not to step on your prostrate apology, but where again was the offense?

Somewhere along the last 30 years or so someone postulated that folks have an inherent right to not be offended. I call BS!

Regardless of what label % one is, one can be assured of 2 things in life, you are born & you die. What one does between those events defines you.

There must be some loose wires, as it's still a little shaky.

Always not good when the backup DB is down; slows the whole world up.
