Heh, all of SETI's webpages unreachable again. Uploading, reporting, and new wu's, are working though. And from here, uploads and the web pages remain in service just great, but reporting and download have been (and remain) down for the past 9 hours, since a brief period of 30 minutes or so when they worked. Outside of that, the outage is now well into 50+ hours. |

Well, at least this site is up & available to me. The past few days I had 30 minutes to 4 hours of access. Now approaching 21 hours. |

Watched a couple of episodes of The Walking Dead last night :) No. I hadn't even heard of it, Zalster :) Just looked it up. Is it good? Spin off series can be a bit hit and miss sometimes, but its viewing figures for the first episode were impressive. @Jord I know.... it's a bit late for yesterday... ... and you can't see the R and the D... but HAPPY BIRTHDAY nevertheless!! Hope you had a lovely day :) |

Thought at first it was router issues, but it looks like Beta and Main crashed as the traceroute doesn't show an issue. |

we should have stayed on our own connection instead of this amateur run campus network It is not campus. The web server has crashed. The machine pings and answers quick, so no routing issues. |

It seems that web -pages are down, still reporting and getting new tasks. Maybe we're lucky and they're working on some permanent fixes?? Dunno if they have an official maintenance window? Doesn't seem so ... |

It seems that web -pages are down, still reporting and getting new tasks. Whatever it was, at least it was short. Seems all fine after an hour or so. |

The main point about moving the original closet kit from the Seti Lab to the CoLo was firstly to take advantage of their better cooling, also a stronger UPS set up, and 24/hour support for rebooting kit rather than remote power strips. The complaint wasn't so much about Seti moving to the Colo, but more that of changing from the trusty Hurricane Electric internet connection to the UCB campus network. I've voiced that complaint the past weekend as well. It's not as if the HE/Campus connection could only be used in place X. |

um. 'you get what you pay for' ? look on the bright side - it's not seti staff that is using their precious time error hunting. |

I think all in all, the project has been doing rather well as of late. The move to the colo I would consider a win. The fire was an unforeseeable, and unfortunate incident. No, I don't think years ago that the project's creators had any notion there would be those like myself that have taken it from a background screensaver to a full time hobby and passion. Or that there would be many others who would do the same. Or that the time would come that they might have trouble collecting enough data to supply the incredible amount of computing power the project has amassed at this point in time. There might be some lean times coming up when we run out of old data to reprocess and incoming data from Arecibo is not enough to keep everybody busy. Hopefully, they are getting closer to the rollout of Green Bank work. |

I assume that they would not be allowed to use the Hurricane Electric connection in the CoLo? Therefore the upside of the move had to be balanced against any downside. When the move was first announced I was one who openly said I was 50/50 about the whole thing. I came around after the move when I saw the overall benefits. It is pointless to make any further speculation until we have a viewpoint from Matt, as the expert, and the man who deals with it day by day. On the contrary. I would be prepared to bet that all our bits passed through the Earl Warren building while being tunneled between Palo Alto (HE termination) and the big Cisco router you will have been shown in the SSL rack. Next, the servers were moved to Earl Warren as co-lo tenants, and I'd bet again that the termination router moved there as well. But the bits will still have passed through Campus equipment (such as inr-211, which I still have bookmarked for the Cricket graphs), before being de-tunneled by SETI's counterpart to the Palo Alto router. Then, mid-May, Earl Warren upgraded to 10 gigabit hardware, and our bits - still tunneled - passed through inr-311 instead of inr-211. Finally, in mid-August, the tunnel was dismantled, and all our weird and wonderful IP addresses were exposed directly to the campus routers, probably bloating the routing tables in the process. My guess is that the de-tunneling, coupled with the return of all the students and academic staff for the new semester, is what finally exposed the under-provisioning of inr-311 and related hardware. Or something like that. Edit - in fact, doesn't that thing behind your head in the photo look like "the recently donated, unconfigured and rather oversized router to ultimately replace the skinnier Hurricane Electric router"? Has everyone else forgotten the continuing problems we had with both connectivity and connection capacity before the move to the co-lo? Moving was like removing a piece of plastic wrap from your face that only had a small hole to breathe through. signature |

Is it good? Spin off series can be a bit hit and miss sometimes, but its viewing figures for the first episode were impressive. I liked it, but a lot of others who like "The Walking Dead" just couldn't get into it. Not enough Zombies or killing of them. It takes place at the very beginning so people haven't seen any or aren't sure what to make of the grey eyed people, or how to stop them. |
