Extra info.

Just so you know the general plan (though we're not promising anything, hence why I'm keeping the official outage window vague). All times PDT.

August 17:
* 4:45pm: shut down projects.
* 5pm: DNS changes at the .ssl.berkeley.edu level
(at this point most everything, including the web site, will be unreachable)

August 18:
* 3am: DNS changes at the .berkeley.edu level
* 5:45am: Jeff and I start changing all the network configs on our systems
* 6am: Campus starts doing all its router/firewall changes
* 7am: Solve any problems
* 9am: If all goes well, start the regular Tuesday outage
* ?: Bring everything back on line

I wish we had access to our own DNS maps, but we don't, and this is the tightest coordination we could do with the SSL DNS manager and the campus DNS manager.

I do believe I caught a glimpse of a similar outage warning here on the Boinc home page as well. Kind of surprised it's still up and I can post.

Yes. I suspect here we only go down when they actually start the DNS changes.

Well I can reach SSP and It shows upload server and download servers running. I was able to upload a slug of APs. Sadly the time stamp shows: 18 Aug 2015, 13:10:05.

Well, can't reach here from the machine at work. I have to remote in from my box at home.
Interesting. Server status page shows Master database queries/second -7,945, yes a negative number! Wonder if there is another 32 bit bug going on.

Seti forums are back.

Pretty much everything is back (Matt posted in NC), but I haven't been able to contact the scheduler yet to report completed work.

I couldn't reach either Seti or Boinc from either work or home until two or three hours later than some of you did.

Anyway, now that that's over, got a question for all ya's.

Comcast/Xfinity has been advertising lately that it can now deliver multiple gigabits of internet speed to your home. Does anyone really need that? My employer just upgraded its entire connection speed to 1.5Gb. That covers 22 buildings with probably 1,500 staff and at least half of our 17,000+ students on line at any given time. All of the nearly 6,000 high school students have just been issued Chromebooks, so at least 2/3 of them will be on at any given time.

So is Comcast really selling anyone anything they really need?

??? Just did a search and what I found was a top speed of 0.105Gb, or 105Mb. Did you perchance read/hear it wrong?

FYI for reference, Seti's Hurricane Electric link was 1.0Gb to give a rough idea of how much data can be transferred on such a link.

As to an individual needing that speed, not unless they are a very exceptional case. And if they are they likely need much faster upload speed as well and definitely fixed IP.

Now 0.1Gb, consider if your family has say 3 teenage boys streaming what teenage boys will, a couple teenage girls on skype with their friends, your wife streaming some craft show or soap opera, and now you want to stream the big game, never mind the torrents you are downloading. I can see that speed.
