Message 46958 - Posted: 31 Dec 2012, 23:47:40 UTC

I have 21 SETI@home files with status of Download: Pending (Project Backoff 00:05:28) - or Retry in 02:07:13 or less.
They just keep resetting when they get to 0.
Been like that for 2 + days.
The FreeHAL and Milkyway seem to be escaping ok.

What to do ??

HELP

Try highlighting those downloads and press 'Retry now', you might have to do this a few times,

(Seti has two download servers, they use roundrobin DNS which switches servers every 5 minutes, but it doesn't work that well, one download server is over utilsed while the other is under utilised}
by waiting a few minutes, Suspending Network Activity for a few moments, then resetting Network activity to where it was before, can get the downloads going from the other server, your mileage may vary as they say.

Since you first posted one of Seti's servers has crashed, so they are not giving out fresh work and there should be no competion for downloads,
i've checked to see if i can re-download one of my Wu's and i can no problem, (so one of the download servers is up)

so the things to do are:
restart your host, restart your router, see if eithier of those make a difference, check that your firewall isn't blocking downloads,
make sure you're not using a proxy (they sometimes help getting downloads through, but aren't available for ever),
make sure you haven't added the download url and IP address to your hosts file (people do this to lock themselves to the under utilised server, but we're recent got a new download server with a new IP address)
try a different ISP to see if there is a routing problem,

What Boinc version are you running? (one of the ealier Boinc 6.10.x versions had a DNS Bug and wouldn't switch IP addresses) and what OS?

Problems like this are best asked at the project in question, there are more people available to help, and some details about your host are available to look at without having to ask for details.

Thanks Claggy.
Rebooted router, Firewall gives Seti full access, no proxy set in Firefox.
Running win 7 Ultimate 64b on Gigabyte MB with 16G Ram.
Haven't touched Host file - wouldn't know where/what it is.
BOINC 7.0.28 (X64)
I don't have another ISP.
I'll try contacting the project now.

Message 47431 - Posted: 21 Jan 2013, 9:14:54 UTC

Recently I have been running 2 computers, 2 lots of 5 cores, 4 from a CPU and 1 from a GPU, but when I upload the results of data processing, the next thing that happens is I get a wad of download, and its on top of a huge wad of data sitting on my computers.
My problem is that it takes hours to get the stuff downloaded, because it gets halfway down and stops for yonks.
Its getting a bit crazy. Is it possible for me to ask for downloads, when they ae needed because I'm currently aborting stuff that just hangs there.
I hate to waste data but I've only got so much tims.

This is the BOINC software website. Other than forum posts, you don't upload anything to the server that serves this website and the server doesn't download anything to you. It sounds like one of the many projects that uses the BOINC platform is sending you data. Nobody here has any control over that. If you have an issue with what a project does you are better off asking at their project rather than here.

Max, your post started out in a different thread where it didn't make much sense. My initial reply was based on that. Then the moderator moved your post here to this thread and now it makes more sense if you're talking about SETI downloads and uploads. My advice: SETI is a waste of time. Finding an LGM/ET is a very romantic idea but it's never gonna happen and I will bet you $2000 it won't happen in the next year and $10,000 it won't happen in the next 2 years. On top of that the SETI servers crash every other day because they're FUBAR and that's why your uploads and downloads go for yonks. Why trouble yourself working on an unattainable goal??? Hmmm? Detach from SETI and find something useful for your computer to do, most any of the other projects in the Add Project wizard are good research. SETI is just a bad waste of expensive electricity.

Well maybe, but do you know that or are you just guessing. If I were one of the "other" things, like people, I would stay away from "US" as far as I could get, and that's so obvious it's not funny. WE are not a very nice bunch of species.
A few years ago, like the 1880's a burial crypt was opened up, in Egypt, after being in the dirt for 2500 years. Over the doorway was a stone lintel, and on it was carved the side on view of a helicopter, among a few other funny carvings.
I spent 6 years working on choppers in the RAN, and 10 years in the Space Business
and then 11 years on chopper simulators. I think I know what they look like, on 2500 year old lintel bricks or yesterdays newspapers.
I do SETI because I know there are people, but not like us, out there and maybe one day they will poke their heads up and say "howdy doo" but until we sort out our crap ideas, nobody in his right mind would want a get involved with our stupidity, regardless of the opportunities.
When are we going to clean up the "shit", or are we going to leave it to kill millions of innocent people.
If "YOU" were a space person and had a opportunity to get among us, would you
make the move to be part of this planets societies.
Right now all I want it to "ask for data" rather than have it shoved down my throat in large quantities.

No guessing I know it.

Stories of helicopters and the avarice of men be damned... you taking the bet or not? Either way, 2 years from now SETI will have found NOTHING. 20 years from now SETI will have found NOTHING... 0.... NADAfriggin'DA, 100 years from now same thing.... NOTHING..... and you will way to yourself "Hmmm, pretty smart guy that kdsjsdj guy" and you will STILL be wrong because it doesn't take a smart guy to see it. It is just so blatantly patently stupid ANY fool can see it. Any fool except the fools at SETI.

Watch it. You're nearing dangerously close to flaming again. You know what happens when you flame.
