I am runing BOINC Manager 7.0.27, which I installed a while ago. Now that .28 is out I'd like to run it instead. I am currently on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, fully updated.

What I downloaded was a massive but strange shell script. When I run the shell script, I receive a message that I should run the downloaded /BOINC/run_manager to start BOINC.

When I run run_manager, it starts the .28 version of the manager, but it isn't connected to the client. Also, the terminal session receives 12 messages that the boincmgr is trying to remove a child which doesn't believe that "we're its parent."

And the .27 manager is still in my side-of-screen "start menu."

The Manager doesn't start the client under Linux, you'll first have to start the client, as in ./boinc/run_client --daemon

However, did you install .27 from Berkeley or from Ubuntu repositories? Because as I said earlier to you as well:

It sounds to me like you installed BOINC first from repositories and are now trying to use the Berkeley installer. I wouldn't do it, as both install BOINC to different places (blame the repository guys, really).

See The Berkeley Installer and Installing BOINC on Ubuntu for the differences.

Thanks. I knew I'd seen something before but I wasn't able to find it.

I think I'll study your BOINC / Ubuntu link a bit more before I do anything rash. Thanks.
