Hi - I installed boinc on a new Ubuntu 12.10 AMD64 system and all I get is a simple view of the manager. Is there a way to get the advanced view? Also, I added the seti project and it says it is downloading stuff... but I have not way to see what it might be doing. Is there more to the installation that I need to do? Some config file to get it to show an advanced view? I need to be able to control when BOINC downloads stuff - I have a crappy Hughesnet connection that will time out if I download too much stuff.

I have the same problem. In another thread, I was told that this is a known problem in the current and several prior versions of the manager. I'll be interested to see what (more expert) responses you get.

OK, I checked the latest response in the other thread. I was told that Ctrl-Shift-A will give me the Advanced layout / menu and Ctrl-Shift-V will give me the Very (?) simple layout / menu again. And it works. I'm a happy camper.

No workey. I get a simple manager view that does not respond to keypresses and which says that it is unable to communicate with the core client.

I installed with the command:

sudo aptitude install boinc-manager boinc-client

Did you start the client, before you started the manager?

./run_client --daemon before doing ./run_manager

I believe I had seti running a few months back when I had this machine built to be a debian machine. I didn't have any problems then...

OK, I re-installed and have the advanced view open. I have seti entered as a project but am getting communication deferred statuses. The notice says a new version is avaialble and directs me to the http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php download page which wants me to download 7.0.28 for Linux x64 (2.95 MB). That downloads a shell script - do I need to uninstall boinc before running this script? What commands do I need after running the script?

You can't update BOINC from repositories with the BOINC Installer (sh script) from Berkeley. They install to different locations.
So check with the repositories first if they don't have an updated (beta) client and else your only option, if you want to use 7.0.28, is to delete the repositories installed version, and then install with the Berkeley installer.

For more information about the differences between the two, see http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC#Linux

OK, thanks, I seem to have it running now.
