I am a user within a school district's computer network, running BOINC 7.0.28 on a laptop/docking station, with JW24F8 sensor from QCN (the Quake Catcher Network). BOINC runs fine after the admin loads it, and I am able to connect to the QCN project. My admin has elevated my user permissions to "full control" for the BOINC program files. Yet, whenever I restart the computer or even close the BOINC manager, my client connection is lost and I cannot reconnect. I recently got the following error message: "You currently are not authorized to manage the client. Please contact your administrator to add you to the 'boinc_users' local user group." But we are unclear about how to do this. Can you help? Thanks. -Richard |

FYI...We're running Win 7...and at startup, the a BOINC message appears in the taskbar stating - "the password you have provided is incorrect. please try again." What password is it calling on? I had been running BOINC with this project without issue before receiving the new laptop and Win 7... Any ideas to share? Thanks. |

BTW...I would have added some output from "stdoutdae" but that file does not exist on my system...No, not even in the hidden file BOINC\ProgramData\... |

First off, excuse me for the late answer. I saw your posts yesterday, but didn't find time to answer them. I have a couple of answers with questions. "You currently are not authorized to manage the client. Please contact your administrator to add you to the 'boinc_users' local user group." See this BOINC FAQ, however, this should've been fixed since the 7.0.27 installer, so it's also just possible that this is an ordinary permissions problem. Just to recap, you can run OK as administrator, but not as a mere user? Was the option "Allow all users on this computer to control BOINC" checked during the installation? What password is it calling on? The default 32 character hexadecimal password is stored in the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file in the BOINC Data directory. When you change it, make sure to just change the first line. Do not add carriage returns to the end of the line. Also keep the file format ANSI, the extension .cfg After changing you're required to exit BOINC fully and restart it. The std*.txt files are in the BOINC Data directory. On Windows this directory is hidden. The BOINC 7.0 FAQ shows default positions for the data directory under Windows and how to get there. |

Was the option "Allow all users on this computer to control BOINC" checked during the installation? I don't remember seeing this as an option during the installation. I have seen it on the Mac OS installation, but not in the Win 7 install. We'll look again. Thanks for the feedback. I will post back after re-trying, but the admin is out 'til next week. More later :-) |

When you are in the BOINC installer, 3rd screen into the installer, click Advanced, then you'll get to a screen where you can adapt this option. ![]() ![]() This option can only be set in the installer, as only there can these command decisions affecting all users on the computer be made. And now you can only get to it, by uninstalling BOINC and then reinstalling it. |

I have this problem too - Boinc is running fine on the Administrator account(windows 7), but not on the user accounts of my 2 children (shame, as they are the heavy users of the PC, and inclined to leave it switched on by mistake, so it might as well be doing something useful....). 1) I tried the CMD line fix suggested in the FAQ 2) I tried uninstalling & re-installing BOINC and this time using Advanced setting and ticking the box to "allow all users on this computer...." Still getting the error message about the password. If anyone has any further suggestions, I'd be grateful - thanks! |

I just installed BOINC 7.0.28 on a new Windows 7 computer. I installed it under an administrator account. I purposefully DID check the "Allow all users" check box. I know this because, on another computer, I installed BOINC on a non-administrator account. I probably checked that box, but I can't be sure. On that computer, when I log on as administrator after logging on as a user, I get a message that another instance of BOINC is already running. Then I get a UAC message and some other error. I want to be rid of all these messages and just have BOINC start and run normally. I am on a peer-to-peer network and don't have any fancy interconnections between BOINCS. I can, at present, see no way to install BOINC on a multi-user Windows 7 computer and have it function properly without messages and errors. FYI: I am the only user of this computer; I just normally run on a non-admin account for security. The issue is further complicated by the fact that I can't simply wipe out the hard drive and start over until SETI is fixed or I will lose the completed work. A further issue is that, on another computer, I intend to try and dual-boot Windows 7 and Windows 8 and, if possible, have a single "users" folder for both OS'es on a separate hard drive from the OS'es. I would probably like to use SETI and BOINC to test this configuration but I don't want to mess with this until I can get it to work properly in a more "normal" configuration. Besides, SETI has to be fixed first anyway. |

I installed BOINC 7.0.28 on a (different) new computer. I ran the installation logged on to an administrator account. During the installation, I observed that the "allow all users" box is checked by default (and greyed out). I clicked "advanced" to obtain un-greyed boxes. I unchecked "use boinc screensaver", leaving "allow all users" checked. I finished the installation, and restarted the computer. I logged on to a regular user account. BOINC immediately gave the message "You currently are not authorized to manage the client. Please contact your administrator to add you to the 'boinc_users' local user group." Attempting to go to "Advanced => Select Computer => localhost" produced the same message. I stopped BOINC. I ran the command prompt as an administrator. The command prompt defaulted to \windows\system32 indicating that I had successfully credentialled as an administrator. I ran the command "net localgroup boinc_users dt /add" per the FAQ at http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?language=1&view=492 . I started BOINC and encountered the same error: "You currently are not authorized to manage the client. Please contact your administrator to add you to the 'boinc_users' local user group." I stopped BOINC. I again ran the command "net localgroup boinc_users dt /add" and received the expected error that the user was already a member of the group. I then ran the command "net localgroup boinc_admins dt /add" per the FAQ. I ran it a second time to verify that the first invocation had been successful and received the expected error. I started BOINC and again encountered the same error: "You currently are not authorized to manage the client. Please contact your administrator to add you to the 'boinc_users' local user group." I can presently find no way to control and use BOINC while logged on as an ordinary user. I do not know if it runs work in this condition or not. The only way to add a project is to obtain control. The only way I have been able to control and use BOINC while logged on as an ordinary user is to stop it (I am aware of no way to prevent it from starting automatically). It is then necessary to "run it as an administrator" (while logged on as a non-administrator). This process must be repeated every time the computer is restarted. There appears at present to be no way to start and run the computer as an ordinary user and have BOINC start and run correctly. There also appears to be no way to prevent BOINC from running at all so that it can be added to the "Startup Group" with proper credentials. Any help would be appreciated. |

Before I yell at the developers (... ;-)), can you please try if our latest test victim BOINC 7.0.42 displays the same problems? You can find download links for it in http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=6698&postid=46743 (last post of that thread). |

Managed to get BOINC running fine on WIN7 system, installed as admin, running as another user. But, can't stop then restart it. I get the msg "You currently are not authorized to manage the client. Please contact your administrator to add you to the 'boinc_users' local user group." Solution for now is to uninstall BOINC, log in as admin to reinstall (enabling other users too), log back into pc as other user, and run BOINC. Reluctant to try newer non-released version, running 7.0.28 (x64) now. Will follow thread and/or wait new release I guess. |

Choosing the "Allow all users" during an install [uninstall then reinstall], has always ensured all and everyone can start the BOINC Manager and to connect or start the core client... at least that's what's done it for me on W7 and W8 Coelum Non Animum Mutant, Qui Trans Mare Currunt |

Thanks for all the help and replies...Shortly after my initial post, our IT admin came by and did something (although I don't know what, and I sensed some hesitation to explain...?)...BUT whatever they did, it's been working fine since. Thanks again. |
