Well it's a shame I know, especially after all these years, but I've now ditched BOINC as I am just fed up with it's annoying failures and it's seeming inability, no matter what additional software is installed to help (e.g. TThrottle) or what config files are created, to rationally use GPU capacity without interfering with the normal use of the desktop in some way shape or form or fans roaring, or both. That's assuming the work would complete without errors in the first place, which was not confined to any particular project by any means. I never used to have all this turmoil until the last few months and I'm fed up with having to spend so much time trying to deal with it. So goodbye Grid Computing, it's been nice knowing you! Maybe I'll be back when I can afford a multi-GPU Tesla-equipped machine with 90gb+ memory...in other words never, not on my pension at least. ;-( Peter Toronto, Canada |

That was before the BOINC software developers messed with the code and made it so difficult to control how it uses resources even using 3rd party tools. When, if ever, they allow full control of that, I'll be back but as it stands I'm not going to sit here and watch BOINC slowly cause my machine to burn out (the worst scenario I admit) or to have to wait patiently to do something graphics-intensive while BOINC decides whether or not it's going to give me a moment of its time. ..not to mention the WU's that kept failing all the time, which according to the BOINC forums, were largely due to the newer versions having faulty code. Peter Toronto, Canada |

Sounds like you might have hardware problems. Buggy RAM or CPU or something. When that much software has that many problems it's usually due to some faulty piece of hardware. Good software can't run properly on flaky hardware. Figure it out for yourself.... there's something like 250,000 people running BOINC and you're pretty much the only one here saying it's totally FUBAR. Oh it has problems but it's not as bad as you say. If it was you'd see thousands of people here screaming about it. There have been changes but most everybody else is still up and running fine. Ever stop and think about that? Hmmmm? Maybe what has really happened is that your RAM has gone bad? Maybe a key file got corrupted? BOINC is not the only thing that changes in your life, everything around you is in a constant state of change. Those other people telling you it's all BOINC's fault... maybe they're just trolling you? Maybe they're just telling you crap to see how bad they can get you riled up? Now go to your room and have a nap and a time out. You'll feel better when you wake up. When you're ready you can come tell us you're ready to go to work and then we'll make the magic work for you again. I was forming a judgement from comments made on many forums about the latest versions of BOINC not being so friendly as earlier incarnations. There's nothing wrong with my hardware, I've checked and double checked. I could of course avoid work that involves GPU use, but then that work seems to be becoming rather scarce. |

Hogwash, all of it. Anyway I don't hear any desire from you to work on it so 'bye. "Windows" -- an American English word, meaning "A real operating system is too hard for me." |

I was forming a judgement from comments made on many forums about the latest versions of BOINC not being so friendly as earlier incarnations. There's all the CPU work you could want at WCG. You could also look at Docking, SIMAP and SkynetPOGS. I would also question as to whether you have hardware/software issues. I run multiple computers with the newest version of BOINC and I find it very user friendly if you take the time to learn how to use it or ask people who are already using it for help. Pretty much set and forget. |

Thanks I may try them again. We shall see as I'm busy with other work at the moment. I wasn't the only one complaining of the problems of failed work units across various projects, I merely added my voice. That was the main issue I had, the over-enthusiastic GPU's were controllable. No-one ever really answered us except to say that going back to a much earlier version of BOINC might help. That seemed retrograde to me. There may have been software clashes, who knows. Not being a computer whiz I find those sort of investigations a little daunting. |

OK I'm back but this time I'm keeping to CPU-only work. I think the problem last time was my GPU was preoccupied and making too many computing errors. Let's blame that or perhaps the 3rd party software I was using to control its use. In doing this I found it isn't that easy to find projects with CPU-only work. So am still in the process of sorting that out. Peter Toronto, Canada |
