I just started today and already my system has locked up twice while running BOINC. I have not been able to figure out why this is happening. I'm running Windows XP home service pack 2, with 90mhz processor and 384 mb RAM. I have 1.5 gb set up for virtual memory.

The only other things running are Norton Antivirus 2006 and my firewall. I have a broadband connection and was wanting to let my system run all time, since I do most of my work on another system.

Can anyone help me?

does this lock up occur when you're watching? Did you recently install boinc and have the screensaver installed? which version of Boinc?

with 90mhz processor

I'm not sure what to make of this one, but it seems awfully slow. :-)

Then again 384MB of memory, with Windows XP SP2 and NAV 2006, that's using up quite a bit of memory... When you check in Task Manager (rightclick on the Windows task bar, choose TM from the drop-down list), and go to the tab Performance, How much memory is it showing as free when you have everything running?

The other thing worth checking is CPU temperature, you can use Everest, ASUSProbe, MotherboardMonitor or similar to find out.

I running the latest version of BOINC. I also checked the task manager and, sure enough, CPU is at 100% usage. This system will only handle 512 RAM at most, so I guess I'll have to upgrade it that to be able to run this.

I've been trying to figure out how to turn off the a new feature of Norton 2006, that being that damn Protection Center, but I can't find any way to do it.

Norton 2006 on it's own should be okay, but with that Protection Center...well.

Thanks all

cpu useage should be at 100 percent, boinc is designed to use ALL unused cpu cycles. I run a celeron 500 with 256 Mram, win98se and it runs OK. I think your problem lies elsewhere.

I'm thinking it is the Norton AV. Everytime the system locks up, the only file that is sited is a Norton temp file. I think it's time to get rid of this AV and get something that isn't as invasive. I have thought about this for a couple of years, but this is the straw...

BTW, if anyone saw it in my first post, my processor is 900mhz, not 90. I'm also running v5.2.13 of BOINC.

you could download a decent cache of wus, uninstall norton, disconnect from the web, and find out. Mcafee works for my various vintages of hardware.

Personally, I found both McAfee and Norton where too invasive of my system. I've use Avast for a couple of years now. It's free. Provide excellent virus protection without all the bells and whistles. It use virtually no resource. It never interfered with any other programs. Auto-updating. Just renew the free licence key every 14 months.
