I have a WinXP host where a virtual LAN connection has been set up for business reasons. The host also has a real LAN connection to the local network.

BOINC always tries to use the VLAN connection when I select 'Automatically detect network connections' or 'Use my Local Area Network(LAN) connection' in the options dialog, but there is no way that the VLAN can connect to the internet.

A proxy.pac file controls the proxy server access. I could bypass it by explicitly by setting the address and port, but I'm reluctant to do that. Even if I did, I'd still be unable to remotely monitor the host.

Any ideas how I can force BOINC to use the real LAN connection?

You may have to change the order in 'Advance Settings'.

1. Right clickon 'My network Places'
2. Select 'Properties
3. Press the 'Advanced' button
4. Select 'Advanced settings..'

In the top box - Connections: , see if the connection you need is below the Vlan. If it is, more it above.

But changing the order here might effect everything, and you end up using the real connection, instead of the VLAN.

Thanks for the suggestion PaperDragon. The VLAN connection was first so I changed the order. BOINC started behaving correctly but (as you warned might be the case) the software that uses the VLAN stopped working until I restored the original order.

Looks like I've got 2 bits of software that require a different LAN connection to be the default :(
