I installed the BOINC packages today for Ubuntu 11.04 and see that the version is 6.10.59, are there updated repositories for synaptic to update to 7.0 ?

May i humbly suggest the BOINC developers 'formalize' this way of getting Ubuntu BOINC updates.. by, e.g., a link on the Downloads page??
(instead of, perhaps, that bare-faced lie that states "Tested on the current Ubuntu Release"!)

7 isn't released to public, so likely you do have the latests. 7 is for the alpha testers.

I know for a fact Rom builds using Ubuntu.

As for keeping the repos up to date, that's up to the Ubuntu package manager.

Never mind her, her medicines ran out and she was thrown into a time-warp back to a year earlier, when BOINC 7 was still an alpha. But no more, BOINC 7.0 has been released to the public since April 9th 2012.

For the rest, Rom does build Berkeley BOINC on Ubuntu 11.10, so it should be compatible with 12.04, although you may want to update some of your libraries when using older versions. Rom further told me he'll be updating to 12.04 next and rebuild 7.0.27 for local use, to see if he can reproduce what it is that ails so many people. All builds after this should be built on 12.04

As said by Kathryn, repository versions are kept up-to-date by repository maintainers. For the Debian/Ubuntu repository fixes drive, see this thread at Seti. They're working from the basis of your link.

As I understand it, the versions in that link are best not used if you don't know what you're doing. Plus the BOINC version in there has been updated several times since you posted your complaint and the link. Meaning that if you aren't updating, you're behind and still working on a 'broken' BOINC.

I have opened a (separate) query as to whether there is any panel indicator icon for GNOME 3, and I'm hoping for a response there.

The official word from Rom is/was that their official policy is to build on the current Ubuntu LTS. LTS stands for Long Term Service. Not every Ubuntu release is an LTS version. The LTS designation is reserved for versions they think are more stable. 10.whatever was LTS, 11.10 was not LTS, 12.04 is LTS. Therefore I doubt Rom ever built on 11.10. The sooner he migrates to 12.04 the better though as much as it will help it won't really solve the only major problem with running BOINC on Linux. See this thread for another idea on how to solve this problem.

When the repository maintainers began their work it was hailed as the solution. It's turned out to be a disappointment because the manitainers don't keep up with the recommended versions of BOINC. Rom and the package maintainers have only so much time so I'm not saying we have been let down, just saying there may be a better way. Check the link above if interested.

Am test driving 7.0.27 from the ppa:pkg-boinc/testing off this launchpad page: https://launchpad.net/~pkg-boinc/+archive/testing . Works well for me, and others have had success installing this on a clean Lubuntu over at WCG. 7.0.24 Repo build gave issues such as not running the sciences [they're loaded but dont start processing], so had to do a sudo service boinc-client stop/start. With 7.0.27 so far fairly smooth ride.
