Message 44499 - Posted: 15 Jun 2012, 15:25:27 UTC - in response to Message 44498.

Anyone know what is happening at CAS@home?

There's a news item at BOINCstats...

Due to the hardware failure to the current CAS@home server, we are scheduling a downtime(a week by estimation) starting from Tue Jun 12 UTC 00:00:00 CST 2012 to set up a new server to replace the current server! In the meanwhile, we need to shut down the whole project and the website before the new server can come into service. Sorry for the inconvenience!
And also appologies to the website unavailibility over the past weekend!

CPDN main project

Jonathan has posted in the News thread of the independent forum:

The data centre in which our servers are hosted has suffered a network problem over the last 24 hours.

The result is that two of our upload servers have had to be taken offline until further notice. The affected servers are cpdn-upload2.oerc and cpdn-restarts.oerc.

I don't anticipate a fix until after the weekend, i.e. Monday 18 June. Please accept our apologies about this.

Seti has trouble with its uploads and downloads. Not a real outage, but you can't get work either.

It seems CPDN is down. Its giving the following error when trying to access their web site. Scheduler requests are coming back with "Server error: Feeder not running"

Warning: mysql_pconnect() [function.mysql-pconnect]: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 113 in /var/www/boinc/projects/cpdnboinc/html/inc/db_conn.inc on line 31

Project is down
The project's database server is down. Please check back in a few hours.

They just came back on-line. They also have a bunch of regional models (of all 3 flavours) available.

CPDN main project

Over the weekend the climateapps2 server stopped working partially. The database was down including our accounts, model web pages, the CPDN-BOINC forum and requests for new models. Jonathan hasn't been able to deal with this until after the weekend. He says:
This problem is down to the database server magically changing its own network settings to some that are not defined anywhere on the machine, as far as we can see.

I am discussing whether to take it offline and rebuild it, because we had planned to do that soon anyway (she is running a vulnerable/venerable OS and MySQL).

Jonathan

EDIT: We are going to put her back into service now, and schedule downtime for two weeks time (3rd week of July).

All the servers are now up and running as we can see on the Server Status page.

This scheduled downtime will be announced in advance.

For the time being our BOINC is only allowed to contact the CPDN servers once every two hours. This reduces the load on the servers. Please do not try in the BOINC manager Projects tab to repeatedly update CPDN, attempting to make it contact the server more frequently. This is counterproductive as it resets the time limit to the maximum of one or two hours, whichever Jonathan has specified.

Spinhenge last posted a status update six weeks ago (late May 2012). Though again without any planning information regarding when they will have new work (in September 2011 they had suggested early January 2012), but the update leaves the implication that new work may well be months away simply by restating plans first indicated last September).

The project apparently has received new hardware (in May), but it seems they have had a pretty much complete restaffing (not sure how many players that is) who are starting from the same point announced in September 2011.

Absent any further information on the website, a guess would be, assuming they are able to retain their new resources, they may be able to restart in the fall. Based on the few updates seen over the past nearly ten months the possibility exists that the project may simply fade into the night.

Assuming the project restarts this fall, the long hiatus, and limited status information provided would likely mean they would need to rebuild a user base from scratch as users over a 12 month (or longer) gap of activity simply move on to operational pastures.

Historically (that is until September 2011) Spinhenge was a very reliable and steady project, though with quite limited updating and feedback information. Since September, they have been reliably offline, and the limited status update and feedback information has amounted to quarterly 'no change' updates.

NumberFields@Home is temporarily down as of yesterday around 1900UTC.

Additionally, would anyone happen to know the status of either Enigma@Home or Mersenne@Home projects? Both are up but no work for some time. Just wondering.

Enigma still has the same problem: http://www.enigmaathome.net/forum_thread.php?id=289. I'll see if I can get a hold of TJM for an update.

Numberfields@Home is back for the time being, but with front page news:

Planned Power Outage
There was a planned power outage last night in the building housing our server in order to upgrade the network. This happened before I could post a news item, so I apologize for that.

There will be another planned outage tonight starting at 5pm AZ time [midnight UTC]. The server should be back up by Thursday morning. I am told all upgrades should be complete at that time.
