Allow people to use use Boinc and perform tasks, anonymously. Allowing an anonymous option means many would not have to register. Some people will see they first must register to participate, and be deterred to continue, because they not want to have to fill stuff out.

Making it easier for people to participate in tasks is obviously a good thing. Having a one click way of getting the software would probably make less possible users close the tab.

(Note: I am not saying it is difficult to register; I am not saying I want to know some trick or work around so I can crunch anonymously; I only searched "Anonymous and "Register," in this forum, before posting)

This isn't possible to use as the work that your computer downloads is registered against that computer. That computer also needs to upload the result files, or the work is rejected.

If everything were to happen on an anonymous basis, there would be no registering of the computers happening and anyone can return whatever they want, be it real results or garbage, and theoretically gain credit for that.

Folding@Home seems to be fine, and they allow anonymity.

FAH doesn't run under BOINC and cannot be compared to BOINC. What they do is their business. If everyone jumps off a cliff, should the BOINC developers do that as well? ;-)

"If you want to post in their forum you have to give a username and password anyway so being an anonymous donor doesn't make sense to me."
Not everyone posts in the forum, or finds a need to. It's not like it's required that you must post in the forum to be a donor. (I know I haven't responded to your first point; I'm thinking whether to get info or concede)

"FAH doesn't run under BOINC"
Never said it did.
"and cannot be compared to BOINC."
Why not? I am aware they are different, but these differences should not give rise to lack of concern for anonymous crunching.
"What they do is their business. If everyone jumps off a cliff, should the BOINC developers do that as well? ;-)"
Was the reason I gave in support of anonymous crunching based off of "FAH does it?" Never did I say "Let's do this, to be like FAH."

There is however anonymous participation in BOINC, just not that you register your account as Anonymous. It's to do with the project option "Should this project show your computers on its website?" .. When set to No, your computers are hidden for anyone looking at your account. E.g. mine at Seti.

When watching work, it'll show like this (that isn't my computer). :-)

Seems like there are many non-registered FAH donors. http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userstats See #1

running anonymously is not too bad an idea and surely not that insecure, if a password or something like that is sent with the task and returned with it, it will be safe enough, the computer can still be logged as having the task sent to it, all of my PC's pop up with weird names I never assigned but are the names of the computer assigned during Os instalation.

I would like to spread the word about boinc to a few organizartions I am a member of and being able to say to them to just download and install would be nice, I do see registering as a slight deterent but all in all i'm not too bothered.

Just because I am registered that does not stop me trying to send garbadge back, the only difference is that you will know it is me and what other PC's i own or control (I have boinc on my work pc, a collegues pc, my sisters pc, my dads pc)
