I just installed Xubuntu 11.10 from CD. Earlier I made a backup of the /var/lib/boinc-client and /etc/bionc-client directories which I restored (overwriting everything already inside the directories) to the appropriate directories on my HD. Now I want to continue were I left off, but BM is complaining it doesn't have the right permissions to open certain files in /var/lib/boinc-client.
I tried to change permissions (as root), but I get errors that the permissions of symlinks can't be changed. These symlinks direct to the file ca-bundle.crt and the files in /etc/boinc-client, but these symlinks are not even in my backup, so they can't be overwritten by the restoration.

The permissions of the directories are set to read and write for group boinc of both directories. But the /etc/boinc-client is owned by root, not by 'Boinc core client (boinc)' like the /var/lib/boinc-client directory.

Also when I start the boinc-client it stops by itself after a short while and BM can't connect to the client. That could be because for the same reason of course. BM can connect to the client when I haven't yet restored the backup.

Can anyone help me to get Boinc up and running again from where I left off?
I already completely removed and re-installed the Boinc install, but to no avail.

What happens if you first restore the backup and then install BOINC over it (as is the recommended procedure;-)?

I've always used the same procedure on Windows, it works there as far as I can remember.

I just tried to copy before installing several times, with and without overwriting already existing files and with changing the group and permissions to read&write. All without result. The client stops by itself and the manager can't of course connect to it.

Maybe I better manually attach to the projects again. I'll lose maybe 2 days of work, I can live with that. The hardest part is to find all the url's again. Most of the projects don't have (regular) work, but there were over 20 attached.

Deep Sigh... ;)

Unless you or someone else can quickly come up with another idea or whatever stroke of brilliance I consider this unresolved but closed.

Thanks and farewell *dramatic chord* ;)

The URLs should be in the different account_*.xml files of your backup (one for each project).

Gundolf
[edit]If you copy only these files into the freshly installed BOINC data directory, you should be automatically attached to the projects. Your previously downloaded tasks will still be lost though. The information about those tasks can be found in the (old) client_state.xml file.[/edit]

Yes, I should have thought about that because I actually knew that. But I've just finished. Many of them are in the 'Choose a project' panel, so they're quick to attach. The rest is just a google, a couple of clicks and a copy&paste away.

Thanks Gundolf Jahn.
