Worked as a daemon, but my purpose was to test GPU projects, and running as a daemon excludes these project!

Yes, that's known, same behaviour on Windows Vista and 7. That's a Windows session 0 security measure, where the drivers and services run in a different session than the user accounts. Added to that the temporary workaround that disables ATI GPU detection at all when installed as a service.

Tried that from the command prompt, but it said I already was a member of the boinc_admins group. Also, added my account to the boinc_users group, but made no difference:

Logged on as an administrator, ran the Boinc Install as an administrator, but got the same message,

Did you reboot at any time? The patch is written for the W8 beta versions that are available.

I think it's more of a thing with Windows 8, that does something differently. But I'll forward your plight to the developers, let them tell what it could be.

That changeset is the source code for the client, determining how it behaves after installation.

skgiven's problem is with the installer, which will use different code entirely. Agreed, they should both have been updated at the same time, and should most likely both have been updated from the same list - but it ain't necessarily so.

While I'm on, a couple of messages back Jord wrote

The actual checkins say "Disable GPU detection of Windows when running as a service" - no mention of limiting it to ATI only, and the code change appears to be in a section that applies to both ATI and CUDA.

I'd prefer it the way Jord wrote it - I don't see why my NVidia/XP hosts should need to be reconfigured because of an ATI coding choice.

While there is a W8 Pro version, by 'Pro' I just meant a professional version, as opposed to a home edition version that can't be added to a domain, and is likely to be missing things.
The actual name is 'Windows developer preview' (WindowsDeveloperPreview-64bit-English.iso), apparently not on your list either.

Anyway, with installer problems and 6.12.38 disabling the GPU/preventing recognition, I am a long way from being able to test any GPU project.

Some CPU projects might still be interested in testing W8. So far as I can see, it works reasonably well; for a pre-beta using a Boinc-beta. Did notice a few tasks fail after forcing a reboot once, they did not recover from their last checkpoint, but that's about it so far. Lots of other programs don't work too well (including CPUZ) but Boinc is surprisingly stable.

.38 disables all GPU detection when installed as a service. It appears that AMD and Nvidia are trying to push GPU processing into large scale grid systems. I figured it was safer to disable GPU detection for everybody than try to figure out that system/driver combination was working/not working this month.

We'll re-enable it after the big shake up is completed and we understand what the new way of doing things looks like.

As far as Windows 8 is concerned, any major tweak to BOINC will more than likely come after Beta 1 is released. This release of Windows 8 was primarily meant for those who are planning on rolling out Metro applications. I would expect quirky things to happen until they lock down the APIs for beta.

Thanks for the clarification, Rom. I have one question : does this only work for BOINC service install, or would it also work for normal install, where boinc.exe is started as a scheduled task at windows startup?

The reason I want to do it this way (which used to work till the ATI 11.7 drivers) is that I do want to use the GPU when I login myself, but I also want BOINC to run when the PC is used by someone else. If I login, I simply kill the scheduled task, start BOINC manager and presto, BOINC starts and GPU goes to work (well, used to in the pre-11.7 era. Now, the scheduled task suffers from the same issue as the service install does)

I could of course do a service install to have BOINC run no matter if anyone logged in, or who logged in. But that way, I can not run GPU applications ever.

The 11.10 Catalysts have not fixed this yet.
The special Rage Performance drivers won't fix this either.

Tested with both with BOINC 6.12.37 and service installation.

I appear to be having the same problem. Just noticed tonight the "connecting to local host" message and a complete lack of activity since late September as reported at the SETI page. I am running version 6.12.34 64 bit as a service on Windows 7 and have Catalyst version 11.8.

You wouldn't have any GPU detection anyway, as the service installation of BOINC will not detect ATI or Nvidia GPUs on Windows 7 or Vista, due to the way that these Windows versions separate the user accounts from the level where the drivers and services run. This is a Windows security feature. It's not something for BOINC to fix, but for Microsoft or the GPU driver manufacturers.

Windows XP does not do this separation of drivers and state, so there you can install BOINC up to 6.12.37 as a service and enjoy your GPUs. 6.12.38 and later have the GPU detection turned off, when BOINC is installed as a service.

The problem is still with the ATI 11.7 (or 11.8) catalysts, which break the detection of the card. If you do not use your GPU, you can get around this with a cc_config.xml file that contains the following lines:

        <no_gpus>1</no_gpus>
    </options>
</cc_config> 

This will require a restart of the client.

I also ran into a similar issue with installing the Citrix solution. It apparently does some magic with the video drivers in enabling its remote solution. It was causing port 31416 to be blocked, it would sit at SYN_SENT and never get an ACK.

Workaround was to disable the graphics card use.
