Hello everybody
I am not a very advanced user.
I just downloaded boinc ver. 6.10.56 of boinc manager for Win7 x64.
As far as I can tell the boinc manager cannot connect to localhost.
I have created exceptions for all of the boinc executables in windows firewall and still the same.
I also found somewhere that it can help to change the properties of the boinc program folder to deactivate "read only" status. That I could not do. If I change it and look at properties again, it goes back to the way it was before.

In the stderrgfx.txt file it says: TRACE [3812]: RPC_CLIENT::init connect 2: Winsock error '10061'

Sorry if this question has been asked to death, but I could not find anything that would help me in the forums.

I would appreciate any help you can give.

Forgot that little detail. Boinc.exe runs for a few seconds, maybe ten, and then stops. I can see it in task manager when I start up boinc, but only runs for a few seconds and then disappear.

About the error. Sounds strange, doesn´t it? that boinc.exe would actively refuse the connection?
Have no idea what it means.

Where can I look for the reason for the client shutting down?
As I said, I created exceptions in windows firewall for boinc.exe and boinc manager, and no other firewall or security software running. I wouldn´t know where to start looking.

Firstly, ensure that 127.0.0.1 and 0.0.0.0 and port 31416 are allowed permissions for BOINC.exe, BOINCmgr.exe, BOINCcmd.exe, BOINCscr and c:\Windows\boinc.scr. Ensure that the path to these executables is specified correctly in Win Firewall.

Secondly, for 'WINSOCK ERROR 10061' and/or no project running in task manager and boinc run without calculate any WU:

  1. Terminate the 2 BOINC processes: boincmgr & boinctray in Process manager, i.e., <ctrl>+<Shift>+<Esc> (click image name to sort alphabetically)
  2. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Boinc (or where you've installed BOINC) in Windows Explorer
  3. right click and select Properties for BOINC Programs folder
  4. remove Read only and Apply to all subsdirectory.
  5. Restart boinc and it run again

im having this same problem, boinc.exe starts, then 10 secs later it shuts down, with no error messages. besides the one the manager gives when he cant find that process.

tried everything you said, but still the same problem. running the same OS as the op, win 7x64.

the winsock error has little to do with this i guess, the problem is boinc.exe shutting down.

also noticed the memory usage grows very fast on that process before shutdown.

Did you look for error messages in the various stderr/stdout files to be found in the BOINC data directory?

Did you try starting boinc.exe in a cmd shell?

People, ever since Windows XP there has been a read-only mark on the 'special Windows directories'. You cannot remove this mark in Windows. Even after trying, it'll return when you next check it. So stop fiddling with it, it's really not what's at fault here. All your files will not be read-only (unless you restored them from a CD/DVD).

@toro & Cmk, is that on a clean installation of Windows and BOINC, or are you using an old (backed-up?) BOINC Data directory?
How did you install BOINC, as a screen-saver installation or as a protected application execution installation? (see this screen shot and this one to decide what you did).

@toro, Winsock 10061 means that the connection was refused, because the application or the service wasn't running. Can you check in Task Manager whether or not boinc.exe actually starts up, and if it does, how many times?

thanks for the replys guys.
This was a fresh installation. But I have tried uninstalling and installing again several times.

this is what i get from stderrdae.txt
Unhandled Exception Detected...

and from stdoutgui.txt:
01:07:02 p.m.: Error: can't open file 'C:\Program Files\BOINC\\RebootPending.txt' (error 2: the system cannot find the file specified.)

I tried uninstalling boinc, rebooting, erasing all of boinc directories and installing again. Same thing.

I´m still very much lost. Don´t know what else to try.

Edit: as far as what I did when I installed it, I didn´t change anything, so whatever the default is.
Also, boinc.exe does start. Only one process. Shuts down after ten seconds or so.

PS the RebootPending.txt file is created during first clean install and then deleted upon boot. Conversely, some reported in past that to pester user to reboot and reboot and reboot... manually deleting the file to end this circle.

His RebootPending.txt file is deleted, else there wouldn't be a message about it in stdoutgui.txt that it can't find the file specified.

For some help on what can cause error 0xc5, see this FAQ.

Also check in Event Viewer (Start->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer) if there are any notifications about what BOINC is doing. Do check Windows Logs->Applications for that.

I think it can, because the client is setting a mutex "Global\\BoincSingleInstance". Normally from preventing it to start twice. Easy to check if it's running.

Hello all...

im experiencing the same foult u guys do... i read the posts here but i cant find anythig wrong... its just stands idle or trying to "connecting to localhost".

i checked Boinc.exe its running, i tried shutting down antivirus & firewalls & started boinc again.. same result.

Before that i even put all programs under "trusted applications" in comodo internet security.

i tried regressing in earlier versions... that i know have worked... same shit :P

only get this in the stdrrdae.txt file

also checked if boinc is running service - its not

dont know what to do... boinc has run problem free 90% of the time ive run it... and every time theres been a problem ive just regressed to the previous version and waited for the next one up n line to get released.

and trying out ur fixes hasnt worked :-(

Have you tried running without Comodo Internet Security, by means of uninstalling it and then seeing what BOINC does then?

I know, that can be a pain... but if things work out correctly with Comodo gone, then it isn't a BOINC problem, or some problem the developers here have to fix. Then it's Comodo who have to fix their program to work with this common software.

If you're running Comodo, ensure that BOINC is not being sandboxed. The sandbox is a virtual environment and BOINC will never work there.

The easiest way to bypass Comodo is to set the security level for anti-virus, firewall, Defense+ and sandbox each to 'disabled'; right click the Comodo icon in the system tray and navigate the context menu displayed.

I'm running Comodo and if you establish the correct internet and computer security rules it'll work fine; see the 'firewall' thread for suggestions on how to set it up.

Furthermore, anything that Comodo may be inderdicting with respect to BOINC will be evident in the Defense+ Events and in the Firewall Events logs. The former with respect to specific apps and the specific action attempted, the latter with respect to attempts to initiate network communication. The logs are extremely specific with regards to what exactly is being attempted and useful for diagnostic purposes.

Clearly the various components of BOINC need permission to perform the actions on the host, and secondly all the appropriate BOINC modules require network access to the internet (and internally), as necessary, for BOINC functionality.

For example, if a BOINC wants to connect to a project an essential function will be DNS lookup (resolving IP address from host name), it requires DNS Client Service access rights. Deny that and the firewall will never complain about BOINC attempting to establish UDP outbound to the DNS server destination port 53; the process will be blocked from even initiating a DNS internet connection. However, before it even gets to that point, BOINC needs to be able to talk amongst itself. This is essentially a networking issue pertaining to localhost, i.e., 0.0.0.0 to 127.0.0.1

Sounds like you and Comodo have to get to know each other better.

I'll chime is as another frustrated non-technical user with this problem.

I'm running:

- Windows XP Pro
- SAV 10.1 Corporate

I have local admin rights on the machine (a Dell Latitude D830).

When I start Boincmgr, Boinc.exe fires up for about 10 seconds and then dies. It does the same if I try to "attach to project or account manager". Strangely (to me), I'm no longer getting any messages from Boincmgr about localhost, but I had been getting those earlier in this battle.

The version of Boinc I'm running (or trying to run) is 6.10.56. I was running an earlier version when this problem started but that was a few weeks ago and I'm sorry, I don't remember what version it was. I also tried 6.10.57 and got the same problem. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing several times (and have rebooted). I removed BOINC using Windows (add/remove programs) rather than the Boinc install process, all to no avail.

I don't see anything interesting in the event viewer, but when I check the services running BOINC is missing.

I have no clue what to try next.

Hi Jord, sorry for the belated reply. When I subscribed to the thread I though it would send me an email so I didn't check back until today.

Re installing it as a service, you're right. I guess I didn't. There was a time when it took a fair amount of fiddling to get BOINC to run properly as a service, then one day a new release came out and it happened automatically. I assumed that was still the case. I don't necessarily care if it runs as a service, but in days of yore I think that was the only way to get it to run when I'm not logged in.

As far as stderrdae and stderrgui go, strangely enough they do not seem to exist on this machine. stderrgfx is there, but not the other two.

I must be doing something incredibly stupid, but I have no clue at all as to what it might be.
