I was reading this page and found that my graphics card, somewhat suprisingly, was compatible. It has an ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO adaptor, listed as compatible on the aforementioned page. I upgraded BOINC to 6.10.56 as directed, downloaded and installed the newest driver, indeed, Windows says it cannot find one newer, rebooted and found...

15/06/2010 16:53:38 No usable GPUs found

... in the BOINC log. I have not tried connecting to a GPU project, doesn't seem a lot of point if BOINC can't see a GPU. Somewhat puzzling.

It is not a great problem as the projects that can use this card, (actually, I have several machines with cards like this installed), are few and far between, but it would be interesting to get this working - if, indeed, it can be made so.

Operating system and in what way did you install BOINC?
If for instance Windows Vista or above and service install, then BOINC won't be able to find the correct library file, due to strict security measures done by Microsoft. You will have to install BOINC as not a service (uncheck protected application execution in the installer).

Windows XP, as up to date as it can be, normal Vanilla install.

Have you tried the drivers from the ATI/AMD web site? The latest available are the 10.5 Catalysts. Legacy drivers are 10.2

(The only project you can use this one on is Collatz, I think. The GPU doesn't do double precision floating point maths).

It's probably also wise to completely remove the older drivers before you install the newest. Just using the Add/Remove Programs uninstaller will leave a lot of gunk behind. See this FAQ for more information and a free program that helps in this.

I used the ATI site you have shown the link for. I ran that Drive Sweeper thing and re-installed as you suggested - hmmm, now when I right click the screen->Properties->Settings->Advanced->Adaptor the info box is largely blank - it was not like that this morning.

What if you look in the catalyst control center?
Did you also reinstall DirectX?

The Catalyst box does not open. When selected, a pause of perhaps 10 seconds occurs, then a messagebox saying "No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver for your ATI hardware". I have used the tool to remove the driver, and re-installed it, (twice now), and here I am. I have done nothing with DirectX.

As an aside, I noticed a few other "graphicsy" things no longer work.

Ok, according to the AMD web site those were the latest ones working with your card. So there's two options:
1. They're wrong.
2. You had a corrupt download.

Best go to http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx and follow the options yourself. And else click the "Search drivers and updates" on the left menu, then go from there.

Interestingly, the 2400 is not on the list there.

I've installed the hotfix, and indeed, the 10.6 version of the driver that was released today, driver first then hotfix. I still cannot load the ATI control centre, the warning box still appears, frequently in fact, and BOINC still reports No usable GPU.

Is it this computer?
http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=963423

Install hotfix first.

Are you sure you get the correct driver?
http://support.amd.com/us/psearch/Pages/psearch.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.1&contentType=GPU+Download+Detail&ostype=Windows+XP+-+Professional%2fHome&keywords=&items=20

Do you have AGP or PCIe card?

If 10.6 do not work try 10.2

Read Release Notes
Read Installation Instructions

Do you get "Option 1 - Full Software Suite"?
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonaiw_xp.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.1&lang=us&rev=10.6&ostype=Windows%20XP%20-%20Professional/Home

Check the size of the file (45.6 MB for 10.6)

Look "Graphics Driver Help Videos"
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

How to uninstall pre-existing drivers in a Windows XP
http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU57RemoveOldGraphicsDrivers.aspx#windowsxp

Try to reboot after each step:
Change the display driver to Generic VGA or SVGA, reboot
Uninstall all ATI, reboot in Safe Mode
Use Driver Sweeper, reboot
Install hotfix, reboot
Install the new drivers, reboot

Do you have latest chipset drivers?

Another download location:
http://www.filehippo.com/search?q=ATI+Catalyst+Drivers

Or try to get the drivers from the Video Card manufacturer web site.

>>> Is it this computer?

Yes, it is that computer I am fiddling with.

>>> Install hotfix first.

Install the fix, without the driver present? Sounds a bit odd to me. Is the hotfix, not a fix for the driver? I used Drive Sweeper to remove the old driver before starting.

>>> Do you have AGP or PCIe card?

PCIe.

>>> Are you sure you get the correct driver?

I got the one it told me to use, you fill in a short form and it takes you to the "correct" page. The 45.6 figure you quote is familiar, So I was probably on that page, just picked the next box down

>>> Do you get "Option 1 - Full Software Suite"?

Nope. Just the driver. I avoid the "recommended" as it is always full of crap I don't want, will never use and cluttering up my disc. It was 28.9k.

My .NET framework is 3.5 Sp1.

I can fiddle around with it a bit more, I have a call open at AMD.

Won't let me edit.

Okay, I just did this again, Driver Cleaner, installed the hotfix before the driver. No change. Still getting the install driver pop up.

[edit]
Downloaded the 45.6M version and did another Sweep, hotfix, driver. No change.

(I do not have ATI - I just try to use "common sense")

How many reboots?

Did you follow?:
Uninstall all ATI, reboot in Safe Mode
Use Driver Sweeper, reboot
Install hotfix, reboot
Install the new drivers, reboot

The hotfix is only to allow your ATI hardware to be recognized :
http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/CatalystAGPHotfix.aspx
A "No compatible hardware found" error message appears when attempting to install the ATI Catalyst™ drivers directly from the AMD download home page for the:
ATI Radeon™ HD 4xxx series of AGP graphics cards
ATI Radeon™ HD 3xxx series of AGP graphics cards
ATI Radeon™ HD 2xxx series of AGP graphics cards

Installing hotfix was suggested by Ageless:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=5815&nowrap=true#33407

It is needed for AGP products (read the page linked above at support.amd.com) - I do not know do you need the hotfix.

"Do you have latest chipset drivers?":
This have nothing to do with .NET
Chipset drivers control the chips on the motherboard and can have influence on e.g. PCIe transfers.

What is your motherboard chipset (Intel, ATI, AMD, NVIDIA)?
Do you have (second) GPU integrated in the motherboard chipset?

Did you try to get the drivers from the Video Card manufacturer web site?
Do you have the original drivers & utilities disk (CD/DVD) supplied with the Video Card?
Who is the Video Card manufacturer?

List of Video Cards by Manufacturers
http://www.directron.com/ilbyman.html

Sometimes they integrate special chips (e.g. TV tuner) on the Video Card and the generic (ATI, NVIDIA) drivers do not work well.

I had a mail from AMD. They suggested I install the driver manually, which I have done. BOINC now sees the GPU at start-up. I have downloaded a "compatible" wu from Collatz Conjecture, the only apparent thing that can use my card, which is sitting there "Ready to Start" - so right now, rather than play with the driver anymore, I'll wait to see what, if anything, it does when it finally runs.

As I said earlier in the thread, it is not a crucial thing for me as none of my regular projects are GPU based anyway. I just figured it was good to get it going if possible.

The motherboard in this machine is a good ASUS, and Intel, it is not fitted with graphics. I am aware of the issue with onboard graphics adaptors, seen it elsewhere.

Thanks for the imput.

Please make a cc_config.xml file (if you don't have one yet) and add into it:

<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<coproc_debug>1</coproc_debug>
<sched_op_debug>1</sched_op_debug>
</log_flags>
</cc_config>

Save the file as ANSI format in your BOINC Data directory.
Then open BOINC Manager->Advanced->Read config file.

Now check your messages. Does it say anything about this task and/or your GPU and the memory that it uses or needs?

?? install the driver manually -
I wonder how did you installed the driver in previous attempts??!

How can the driver be installed not-manually??

I don't imagine other than manual install.

Download (= Save to hard disk), exit browser,
Uninstall previous driver, reboot, ..., Run the saved installer to install the new driver.

And again:
Did you try to get the drivers from the Video Card manufacturer web site?
Do you have the original drivers & utilities disk (CD/DVD) supplied with the Video Card?
Who is the Video Card manufacturer?

The drivers from the Video Card manufacturer may work better.
Can you play 3D games now?
Can you use 3D OpenGL & DirectX ScreenSavers?
