Warning here as well: NEVER post your authenticator keys in any forums. They are your unique identification code for the project. You will have to register at each project independently, but you can use the same email address at all of them. You will also have to register separately on these forums.

With YOUR authenticator key, others can log in to your account and take it over, change things (your password), post crap with your nickname, add spam or worse to your profile, get you banished.

Just do not do it!

Hi, I just upgraded to the new version, on a windows Vista machine with an Nvidia graphics card.

I cannot get the program to run properly. Nearly every time I start it off, it prompts me to connect to projects. The only screen which shows anything to do with my projects is the statistics display. I go through and connect to my projects (seti, docking & einstein), but they don't appear on the projects page. The tasks page only displays the progress bars, with some complete and some in progress. There is no indication of what they are, though.

After connecting again to the 3 projects, the program does *something* but I can't see what. It flashes up a message on the left side of the task bar, but it is not there long enough to read. It does this many times, then the program just dies without giving any kind of error message.

I have all the preferences set the way they were before, and I cannot see what else I can change to get it to work. Any hints or tips would be gratefully received!

Thanks.

If your Vista is 64bit, did you have a 32bit installation of BOINC before and do you now run a 64bit version? Or did you have a 64bit version before and do you now run a 32bit version?

Did you change the path to the BOINC Data directory? Do you have more than one such directory now?

Both versions are 64-bit. I changed from 6.10.18 to 6.10.58. The data directory is in the same place as before, and I can't see another one anywhere.

Since I posted the earlier message, the program has been running, somewhat. It now lists my projects on the projects page, but despite messsages stating that it downloaded a bunch of workunits, the tasks page still only displays the progress bar.

I found a file, stderrgfx.txt, which contains the following:

11:10:23 (5780): Starting graphics application.
11:10:23 (5780): fullscreen mode requested.
Successfully loaded './Helvetica.txf'...
Successfully loaded 'boinc_logo_black.jpg'.

The last 2 lines are repeated many times.

Sorry to bug you, Sir.

But I have got the error message "Failed to add user to "boinc_admins" group (Administrator)".

I was trying to install it on Win 2003 Domain Controller.

Is this problem fixable somehow?

Sorry again.Thanks.

There's your problem. Please see http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Release_Notes#BOINC_6_incompatible_with_Domain_Controllers.

Message 35048 - Posted: 1 Oct 2010, 9:48:36 UTC - in response to Message 35041.

I changed from 6.10.18 to 6.10.58. The data directory is in the same place as before, and I can't see another one anywhere.

Checked the permissions on the data directory? Nothing that changed?
Are any of the files in the directory read-only, by chance?
...but despite messsages stating that it downloaded a bunch of workunits, the tasks page still only displays the progress bar.

BOINC 6.10.58 has a feature that hides tasks that aren't active or activated in any way. Tasks ready to start, uploading/downloading, ready to report are by default hidden from view. Only tasks running, waiting to run and suspended are showing up.

Do (temporarily) change that, click the "Show all tasks" button. This button will change in "Show active tasks". It shows the option you have, not the state it is in. It's there to safe-guard against the problem BOINC Manager (BM) has, when too many tasks are in the cache that BM will lose its connection to the underlying client. This is because the amount of time to generate a real-time representation of what's showing in the Tasks tab cannot be relayed into the 1 second refresh time of the remote procedure call used to do this. e.g. 1,500 tasks take 1.5 second to refresh, while the RPC is only 1 second.

I found a file,stderrgfx.txt

Which has nothing to do with anything. The stderrgfx.txt file is showing debug lines of the graphical application of the project that runs in that slot. Not all projects have it, as not all have built their graphics application with the latest graphics API, nor do all projects have a graphics application.

It will be generated and added to when the screen saver runs this project's graphics app (when one of its tasks runs). Which in this case means your BOINC runs normally.

I normally have it set to "show all tasks", and never have more than about 50 or so at any one time. In any case, there is no change to what is shown, regardless of the setting. All the fields are blank, except for progress. This shows an empty box, with shading to show partial completion.

And you're absolutely sure that the messages stated it downloaded any work, not just master files and such?

Yes, it has started and finished several downloads and uploads from different projects - except seti which only seems to accept connections for about a day every week.

It seems that for the last week, none of my projects are updating. I get messages that the projects are down for maintenance or no work is available. Rosetta has stopped. World Community claims to be down for maintenance and not uploading work units. Then after days of this, Rosetta downloaded work. MilkyWay downloaded work that had way too many hours required for the time and Boinc had to force it into Priority mode.

Is something going on with Boinc?

Not Boinc but the projects. WCG was definetely down for a short while since I had the same messages. All project go down sometimes, either for maintenance or due to server problems. Boinc only reports the rusult of attempting to contact the project.

Since I started installing BOINC 6.10.56 and 6.10.58, I noticed that after installation/update of these versions of BOINC my computers show up multiple times in my host list:
Host List 1
Host List 2

The split hosts are split exactly along projects, and one by one the projects are moved to the newest host.
This has never happened before with any update of BOINC, but it has happened on every host that I updated to 6.10.56/.58.
It also is not restricted to one stats site, as you can see from the two links above.
In addition, I find the very same effect every time I hook up the host to a different network (home, hotel, friend). The respective host immediately branches of a new ID, which over time collects all the projects again. Until I hook it up to a different (or the old) network, causing it to split again.
What is most annoying is the fact that it is impossible to really get any idea of a hosts performance because it is split into 2 or even three IDs. And since all the projects are migrated to the latest host ID, I always loose my history (like "Best 5 days").

This issue has been discussed at BOINCstats, but no solution yet:
http://boincstats.com/forum/forum_thread.php?id=5552
http://boincstats.com/forum/forum_thread.php?id=5758

So the fact that
- this never happened with any host at any BOINC update before,
- this happened to every host I updated to 6.10.56/.58 exactly the moment I updated it,
- this happens again every time I switch networks, and
- this is not restricted to a single stats site
make me believe, this is a BOINC bug.

Or maybe I am doing something wrong here?

I would appreciate some advice.

Friedrich

Hi,

I´ve just installed Boinc 6.10.58. I try to attach to different projects like Seti, Einstein and Rosetta just to find out if this works. Each try fails to attach to any project. I have not been around for quite a while so maybe something in my setup is wrong. Appreciate any help if possible.
