Hi,

I had been working with computational fluid dynamics tool called Fluent for some time and during this time I also had the chance to let my simulation model parallely computed on a cluster system. for this the mesh was parted. Now I thought this would be cool to have for other projects in boinc, but currently this would take to long, because the parted mesh need to join their results for each iteration step and can work for their own afterwards.
If this will happen several 1000 times this can't be done with a current boinc system. So I would like to give the idea to do some kind of VM-mode, where several clients can work together for one WU. this will be difficult for internetconnected client, but on a campus scale this could be fine! because you need to have all contributing clients available during this time and the generated traffic for joining the results at each iteration step is also a big problem when clients are connected with ordinary internet. So on first step this should be an alternative to creating your own cluster system, and in another mode then it could be done by clients via internet, but these must follow strict rules like being online during the run and using a high-speed conection fullfilling the requirements, so basicly you should know all participants :).

But I really like the idea to add a new purpose to boinc.

I allready asked OpenFOAM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenFOAM what they think about this and what they would need, and they really need the possibility to compute parallel parts.
But perhaps boinc could give those opensource software an easy way to create a cluster system, so that they don't have to code that for their own, even if this will mean that the clients are more limited to participate.

Perhaps this will add a nice new feature to the swiss army knife boinc :).

BOINC is simply not made for tasks that need communication between separate instances. If you need a cluster, use a cluster.

"The main requirement of the application is that it be divisible into a large number (thousands or millions) of jobs that can be done independently."

for sure the current one is not made for it, SO I give an idea for a new mode.
nothing more, nothing less then just an idea to let boinc grow inother direction and offering more features to projects, that can't use boinc right now.

and as far as I know some projects would like to have a VM modei boinc, whether it is for coding an app once and let it run in VM mode on all systems.

I'm not asking to get it this month, it's just a new idea for your roadmap

I really don't understand how virtual machines are related to high-bandwidth inter-node communication...
