Message 31714 - Posted: 22 Mar 2010, 18:38:57 UTC

Ever since I've tested anything above 6.10.21 I will see hostname not found OR projects failing to report.

if I choose Tools->Sync with GridRepublic, for example:

Mon Mar 22 14:15:54 2010 Starting BOINC client version 6.10.43 for x86_64-apple-darwin
Mon Mar 22 14:18:54 2010 Fetching configuration file from http://www.gridrepublic.org/get_project_config.php
Mon Mar 22 14:18:55 2010 Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
Mon Mar 22 14:18:56 2010 Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

However, back on 6.10.21 I see:

Mon Mar 22 14:24:13 2010 Version change (6.10.43 -> 6.10.21)

Mon Mar 22 14:25:04 2010 Fetching configuration file from http://www.gridrepublic.org/get_project_config.php
Mon Mar 22 14:25:08 2010 Contacting account manager at http://www.gridrepublic.org/
Mon Mar 22 14:25:08 2010 Account manager contact succeeded
Mon Mar 22 14:25:08 2010 SETI@home Sending scheduler request: Requested by account manager.

I'm not sure if this has been a BOINC Client issue, or a Grid Republic issue. After looking through the message boards - I do see a lot of folks having issues with reporting. I'm wondering if this may contributing. As I mentioned in the topic, I've seen this on all test releases since 6.10.33

Running on x86_64-apple-darwin 10.6.2

cheers!

Message 31721 - Posted: 22 Mar 2010, 23:12:34 UTC - in response to Message 31714.

Hi Dan,

BOINC uses a couple of open-source libraries called cURL and c-ares to do its network communications. The difference between current and earlier versions of BOINC is that we upgraded to cURL version 7.19.7 and c-ares 1.7.0 for the newer release.

cURL version 7.20.0 was recently released. Since we have not been able to reproduce your problem with resolving hostnames, it would be a great help to us to know if the new version of cURL has solved your problem. If so, we would upgrade to the new cURL for future releases of BOINC.

Please try this test version (using cURL 7.20.0 and c-ares 1.7.0) first. Only if it does not solve your problem, then please try this other test version (using the older cURL 7.19.4 and c-ares 1.6.0). Please post back here whether either or both of these worked for you.

I really need to know the results, as we have not been able to duplicate this problem.

Thank you for your help.

Cheers,
--Charlie

Hi Dan,

Thank you for your help. Your results seem to indicate that the problem is either with CURL 7.19.7 and 7.20.0 or with c-ares 1.7.0. To determine which it is, I've made a new test build using CURL 7.20.0 and c-ares 1.6.0.

Would you be kind enough to download and try installing this version and let me know whether the connection problem reappears?

Thanks again.

Cheers,

This also corrected 1 (one) hostname not found for Pirates@home. While BOINC,Einstein,Rosetta were being 'found' I noticed Pirates had earlier failed to resolve ( weird that only 1 name would fail, I'll take it as just a 'error' ) -

Thanks -

Hi Dan,

So it seems pretty clear that c-ares 1.7.0 is the culprit.

As it turns out, a new version, c-ares 1.7.1 was released just today. I've built another test version (test4) using curl 7.20.0 and c-ares 1.7.1. and posted it here.

Would you be so kind as to try it and let me know if they've fixed the problem in this new release? If it works, it would be nice to be able to go forward instead of reverting back to an older version of c-ares.

Thanks again for your patience, persistence and help!

Cheers,

I wouldn't think they should be interfering since the 'client' is calling everything.

Message 31747 - Posted: 24 Mar 2010, 21:18:52 UTC - in response to Message 31740.

Hi Dan,

The main difference from c-ares 1.7.0 listed in the release notes for c-ares 1.7.1 is
• added IPv6 name servers support.

Since I don't know much about these things, I asked one of our other developers to look at the TCPDump. He wrote:
It doesn't look like it is falling back to the IPv4 standard when IPv6 fails.
Per: http://www.dns.net/dnsrd/rr.html It should have fell back to querying for an A record.

By chance is he using a new Airport Express home router?

Also would you be kind enough to go back to the current alpha test version 6.10.43 of BOINC and run the same TCPDump and post it here? Since the IPv6 support is new to curl 1.7.1, it could be quite helpful to see the same diagnostics for 1.7.0.

Although we will go back to curl 1.6.0 for the immediate future, I would like to be able to provide the developers of curl and c-ares with enough information so they can fix this problem in future releases.

Thank you again very much for your help.

Actually.... I use an AirportExtreme router when I am in GA, But here in MI, I'm using the Mac to connect to the U-Verse 2-Wire gateway. And YOU are correct, The problem is within the Airport Client.

Test 1
1) Turn off Airport Express
2) Plug in ethernet
3) Tools->sync with Grid Republic - success

Test 2
1) Upgrade to 6.10.43
2) Ethernet still connected
3) Sync Success

Test 3
1) Still on 6.10.43
2) Unplug ethernet / start using Airport -> 2 Wire box
3) Sync Fails
4) tcpdump follows

Apologies for all the running around.

I'll try and look at all the advanced configurations for the Airport for DNS/Proxies/ - If you have any ideas, I'll be glad to try them.

Cheers! and thank you all again - back to basic troubleshooting..

dan
Update.... a few minutes later -

DUH.... Went into Airport/Advanced and changed DNS from 192.168.1.254 to 8.8.8.8 ( google public) to test and it worked

Not Me! I did nothing.
Why is Boinc Suspending network activity?

Settings look normal.

When you open the global_prefs_override.xml file (in your BOINC Data directory at (may be hidden)), what value does it say at <suspend_cpu_usage>X</suspend_cpu_usage> ??

Did you check the Activity menu?

Obviously network activity is resumed when you force an update, but that is only temporary if the menu is set to "Network activity suspended".

What happens if you suspend and resume the network activity without pressing the Update button?

Thanks Gundolf, you got it.

Perhaps there was a different default value in one of the Beta applications I used, or some strange series of events ended up changing it.

I don't like the way there are 2 places to control network settings. Why have settings under Activity and Advanced Preferences?

I downloaded the 6.10.43 to test on one computer and was wondering how you go about setting the resources to 0 for a project so it can be a "stand by" or "back up".

My Team mates have said that this would be something controled by the project not by BOINC.

From the way I read it, this is something BOINC would be in control of because you may have a project on stand by for one PC but may be running it at 100% on another PC.

But I don't see anyplace during or after attaching to allow you to set a project to 0.

Also, if I understand this right BOINC would treat this project that is set to 0 as if was not attached and so would not ask for any WU's from that project. Right?

Project->Your account->Project preferences->Resource share.

But as far as I know, it only works on Seti. Perhaps on other projects that updated to later back-end updates as well, but you'll have to test that. If the value resets to 1 (or 100), that project isn't updated.

That is how you do it for the project which would limit any computer running that project for that location.

Based on the "NEW" improvements from the way it reads makes it sound like there is a setting in BOINC to control the PC it's installed on.

New: Added ability for a project to be specified as a "Backup Project" by setting its resource share to 0

This is added to BOINC not the project based on what the above statement says.
