Check BOINC's message history for other red text. If you are low on disk space you can encounter your problem. Also make sure your settings allow enough disk space for it to use.

Go into Preferences in your BOINC Manager, press the Clear button, then exit. Go to the SETI@home web site and set your Computing Preferences there, then go to the BAM! web site and do the same. Now go into your BOINC client and synchronize your client.
