I had 6.10.32 installed on 2 machines while monocrunching PrimeGrid's February 3 day challenge. The project application in use is LLR 5.11, which is known to be highly CPU-intensive. The 2 machines are an Intel P8400@2.26GHZ dual core (64bit) & an Intel T5450@1.66GHZ dual core (32bit). Both machines are Vista SP2, both have BOINC installed as a service. Both machines had recently been cleaned (i.e., dust blown out), are well ventilated, and were running fine. I was monitoring CPU temps with Tthrottle 1.73, and this confirmed that CPU usage was continuously near 100% while running hundreds of ~15min long LLR results.

On both machines, the BOINC client began to crash at irregular intervals <=every 2hrs. Whether it was the LLR .exe, the PrimeGrid LLR wrapper, or the client itself that was initiating the failure I have no idea, but the outcome was that the BOINC client service fell dead in its tracks on both machines multiple times--presumably due to some kind of unhandled exception. As far as I can tell, BOINC was the only thing that failed on either machine. Each time, the service restarted without complaint and continued until the next crash.

After about 24hrs I decided to revert BOINC to the recommended version. After uninstalling the beta & reinstalling 6.10.18 I continued the PrimeGrid challenge with all other conditions remaining the same. I've now run for a further ~31hrs on 6.10.18 without any more crashes.

I'm not whining here, just reporting what I observed. Like the disclaimer says:

I don't see how the Manager would come into this, but the Core Client handles its communications through libcurl: and there has been a recent update (bugfix) to libcurl, at about v6.10.22

Could this have crept in as a side-effect of the libcurl update?

Monitoring with TThrottle is fine, but with PrimeGrid too, 4 concurrent jobs making my CPU go up by at least 6C at 100% load, you need to set the tool to cut down the cycles.

Why should there be a temperature problem with 6.10.32 but not with 6.10.18 when running the same task mix?

I should also mention that I didn't use BOINCMgr at all during this episode, because of its high CPU demand even when minimized (hint to developers). The goal was to crunch as much PrimeGrid as possible without giving away ~15% CPU time to the Manager even when it's in the systray. I used strictly BoincTasks which suspends when minimized. (Each time the client crashed, BT was not active.)

CPU temperature was never a problem on either machine, & Tthrottle never needed to do any throttling. I mention it only as confirmation that the LLR application is highly CPU-intensive, as advertised by PrimeGrid. They went so far as to recommend that hosts be stress-tested before the challenge. (Which I did, but with the 6.10.18 client installed.)

I'm not sure how close to 'finished' 6.10.32 is supposed to be; I also know that a beta release often contains debug code that loads it down somewhat, and is removed before an official release.

The good news out of all this is that the 6.10.18 client appeared quite stable, running at full bore, under identically stressful conditions.

Error -148 means that BOINC couldn't start a new process, or that you (or something else) tried to start the client, while it was already running. BOINC can only be started once, the manager can be started multiple times.

I see you aborted all the rest of the work on that machine.

Looks like it's a Primegrid problem.

These would both be erroneous conclusions, possibly due to only seeing part of PrimeGrid's database. PrimeGrid's servers were (and still are) heavily taxed. I completed ~2300 PPS LLR results during the 3 day challenge on three hosts. I did abort a relatively small number of results on all three machines, to return them to the challenge work pool. Two of three hosts (dual core/no GPU, one 32bit, one 64bit) experienced crashes of the BOINC 6.10.32 client as previously reported. The third (a quad core/NVIDIA GPU) did not crash...possibly because BOINC was not installed as a service (to allow the GPU to run under Vista). All three hosts were running PPS LLR tasks exclusively on eight CPU cores. The lone GPU was working on other projects (Seti, GPUGRID). All three hosts were halted on day 2 to reinstall BOINC 6.10.18, after which the challenge continued as before, with no further crashes of the BOINC client.

Open the stderrdae.txt file in your BOINC Data directory and check what the last entry in it was and if it coincided with the crashes. If it does, post that information here, please. Including the stack trace that's hopefully in there.

I have forwarded this information to the developers, but since you're the only person who has seen this behaviour, it may be something local.

Looks like it's a Primegrid problem.

Broken wrapper or not, the 6.10.32 client didn't trap the error and move on, it crashed. I believe that makes it, by definition, a BOINC problem. I'm happy to .zip and forward my complete stderrdae logs to anybody who'd care to analyze them.

This error can happen when a task has exceeded the maximum CPU time or maximum disk space. The abort message causes the science application to call DebugBreak() which causes the 0x80000003 error code.

The idea being that if either the memory or CPU usage has been exceeded then there is either a memory leak or an infinite loop that the project needs to debug. DebugBreak() will cause the Windows Debugger to start up and dump a stack trace of the stuff the application was doing, and report it back to the project.

Most of the times you come across this error message however is when you have manually aborted one or more tasks that were running at that time. Aborting running tasks will also call the DebugBreak() routine and do the same dump of information as before.

Those crashes are with BINC itself, but for one reason or another the symbol files didn't download for the BOINC specific components. So I don't quite know what is going on yet.
