Message 31054 - Posted: 16 Feb 2010, 7:56:00 UTC

Hello,

I recently upgraded BOINC (few days ago?), and am running XP pro. Today I get a window saying to set my internet connection. Well, my internet connection is working fine, but BOINC can't use it.

Figuring that BOINC would use the same connection as IE, I checked there. It's blank, as well. It comes up fine in Control Panel.

How do I fix this? Thanks,

SETI's air conditioning in their server closet went down and they have had to shut down most of their servers to prevent heat damage. They will be back up as soon as they can get it fixed.

Oddly, my fix was just re-setting up the connection in IE.

Why *all* my connection listings disappeared remains a mystery.

As soon as IE had the settings, BOINC quite happily resumed using it.

I haven't been using IE a lot lately, but I have used it, almost every day.
I've kind of switched over to Chrome.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It's good to see so much life in the group.

I have also been having a similar problem. Windows XP & IE8. The Boinc message says to go to advanced, connections. What then? That window only says "America Online" which has been disconnected for years. In the control panel in Network connections, it says "connected to local connection area 3" Fine. So what do I do with that info. I see nowhere to type it in Boinc's advanced, connections window.

BOINC will (normally) use whatever is your primary internet connection as depicted by the OS. The Advanced->Options->Connections window is (as far as I know) mostly used for dial-up connections.

Did you allow BOINC through your firewall? Boinc.exe will need permission to pass through on TCP ports 80 and 443.

Hi,

I have not been able to get boinc to communicate with a project. I keep getting a message telling me I need to connect to the internet. The problem with this is I have a broadband connection and I have given boinc the permissions it requires in zone alarm firewall.

I would appreciate any suggestions on how to fix this problem.

I am having the same exact issue on my Mac. It was working fine then suddenly a few days ago it stopped working. I totally deleted the project and re-installed it with no effect. I also tried using it without BAM.

It's definitely an issue with the communications. And it's not the computer as everything is working.

That's why I think it's an internal client issue.

Assuming it's Windows, which Windows is this on?
Which BOINC version?
Which Zone Alarm version?

Is Windows firewall also still on?
Are you using a proxy?

Can you post the first 20-30 lines from BOINC Manager after you started BOINC up, please?

Hello Darsys,

6.10.21 was the last build using an older version of the communications library libcurl. We are trying to determine whether the newer version of libcurl is causing your problem. I have built a special test version of BOINC for you to try.

Would you be kind enough to download the test version from here and post to this thread whether it fixes the Couldn't resolve host name problem.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello again Darsys,

BOINC uses a couple of open-source libraries called cURL and c-ares to do its network communications. The difference between BOINC 6.10.36 and earlier versions of BOINC is that we upgraded to cURL version 7.19.7 and c-ares 1.7.0 for the newer release. The test build referenced in my previous post has worked for several others reporting the same problem; it was the same BOINC code but reverting to cURL 7.19.4 and c-ares 1.6.0.

cURL version 7.20.0 was recently released. Since we have not been able to reproduce your problem with resolving hostnames, it would be a great help to us to know if the new version of cURL has solved your problem. If so, we would upgrade to the new cURL for future releases of BOINC.

I've posted another experimental version of BOINC 6.10.36, this time using cURL 7.20.0, here. Would you be kind enough to try it and report back here whether this newer test version works for you?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Read the Project homepage:

Projects are down due to a database machine crash.
The machine that serves the BOINC database crashed. The projects are down until the recovery is complete. The current database machine has become too unreliable to continue as the primary DB server. We are going to move this functionality to the machine that is currently acting as the replica server. This will be a temporary fix, as this move will leave us with reduced throughput capacity. We are ordering a new replacement sever. This purchase is made possible by generous donations from SETI@Home participants. 19 Oct 2010 16:07:28 UTC
