What are the system requirements for BOINC? I've looked everywhere and can't find them.

I'm trying to run World Community Grid using BOINC. WCG's requirement for RAM is 128MB. I read somewhere that with BOINC you can run WCG with less than 128MB.

I'm trying to find out how this is true. I've installed BOINC with only 64MB of RAM and it doesn't seem to be working.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Basically, the requirements for BOINC, are that you have a computer with an internet connection.
BOINC is just a 'housekeeping' program. It's the projects that take up lots of space for files, and have varying ram and processor speed requirements.
With only 64 Megs of ram, you won't be able to do much work on any project.

Each project site should have a list of minimum hardware requirements.

E.G. climateprediction needs about 3Gigs of hd space for programs and data, at least 256Megs of ram, (and preferablly 512Megs), and at least a 1GHz processor if you are going to run other projects as well, and want to finish the long runs in a reasonable time.
But it is the most computationally intense of the projects, and not all computers can handle it.

I don't know the requirement of other projects, but Seti says it needs 64MB after the OS is loaded, meaning 64MB won't quit cut it. The Seti-Beta is developing an enhance client that will soon be ready to replace the current Seti client and it will only require 32MB.

Most likely the requirement is the same in the BOINC version as well as the other version. If the project staff actually put 128mb into the BOINC setup that will need you need more than that on your computer since some memory is lost to overhead before BOINC checks it.

My computer started as a 450 MHz PIII. www.powerleap.com sold me a nice microprocessor upgrade; now it's a 1.4 GHz Celeron. 768 MB of PC100 ram. Wasted some time crunching work for ClimatePrediction that got lost with Windows98; since upgraded to WinXP that runs Boinc smoothly. Boinc Manager v. 4.45 running CPDN, only.

I finished a "hadsum" work unit in 3 months.

Just started a "sulfur_cycle" work unit. Boinc Manager says "CPU Time = 364 hours" and "To Completion Time = 4127 hours." Looks like this work unit will total a bit over 6 months to complete.

Maybe this represents a minimum system for Boinc? However, it runs smoothly in the background, doesn't seem to make any trouble. When I do something CPU intensive, suspending Boinc doesn't help, so it must be giving the CPU to other applications without objection when they require it.

In fact, I have a utility (TaskInfo) which directs the operating system to keep my Boinc, Manager, and Sulfur computations all running at "High Priority." It still doesn't slow down my computer.

If your computer presently has a minimum amount of memory, the easiest, most cost effective upgrade you can make is to increase the memory. My old-technology PC100 memory is a bit expensive, but modern DDR memory is real cheap. Instead of aiming for the minimum requirement of memory for Boinc, I recommend spending $50 on 512 MB of DDR ram, and give up all your worries. If you also want to browse the internet while listening to streaming music, then get two.
