Lets say I want to squeeze as much work (work units) as I can from a new computer.

Is it better to spend more money on more/better CPUs, or, more towards the GPU?

It depends on the projects that you are interested in. On the projects that support GPU processing you do get much more bang for your buck with the GPU. ATI also seem to outperform Nvidia but there is only a couple of projects so far that support ATI. We're still in the infancy of GPU enabled projects. In any case you still need a decent CPU to feed the GPU.

Do check with the projects forums to see what their requirement are before making a decision of which way to go.
