Message 30348 - Posted: 26 Dec 2009, 23:14:18 UTC

I put an ATI HD 3870 video card in an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ machine running Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit and BOINC 6.10.17 and added the appropriate brooks libraries. I installed the latest 9.12 Catalyst drivers successfully and the card is working fine. I have reinstalled both the ATI drivers and BOINC to no avail. I'm getting the "no usable GPUs found" message in BOINC in spite of numerous efforts and much web research.

Has ANYONE gotten an ATI card crunching on 64-bit Ubuntu successfully?

I'd really like to get this up and crunching. I have applied every trick I could find, and have got Nvidia cards up and crunching GPU work on this OS, but I've reached a deadend here with the ATI card.

This FAQ seems to indicate support.
Why your card isn't being recogignized is another matter. The '64 bit' part of your setup, perhaps?

Check out MilkyWay@Home and Collatz Conjecture. I don't know which OS or ATI GPU they support.

Collatz is the only project currently with a 64-bit Linux GPU app for ATI cards, and I have been posting there, unsuccessfully, in my attempts to get BOINC to recognize the card.

I'm specifically looking for help from someone who has actually got an ATI card up and crunching on 64-bit Linux, hopefully Ubuntu.

I'm interested, too, in getting the boinc user added to the video group. The GUI tool lacks the necessary functionality, and the command:

sudo usermod -a -G video boinc

...also fails to do anything. This works in all versions of Linux I've ever used, but for reasons I can't fathom, fails to do anything in Ubuntu. I'm not optimistic about it making any difference, anyway. In spite of people's insistance on it working, for both Nvidia and ATI cards, I've never had to do it on the machines running Nvidia cards on 64-bit Ubuntu. But, worth a try if I can actually get it accomplished.

Looking at BOINCstats, there are 9058 hosts on Collatz; 547 are running Linux, 9 'other' systems, and the rest Windows.
Of the AMDs, there are quite a few 64 bit Athlons.

As successful crunchers seldom visit help forums, perhaps your best bet would be to look at the info on the Collatz site and see if there's a list of 'Top hosts'. Then look through the list to find those computers running 64 bit Linux OS.

Which is the config file?

Edit: created an cc_config.xml in BOINC folder

<cc_config>
<log_flags>

Edit: created an cc_config.xml in BOINC folder

It has to go to the BOINC data folder, where also the client_state.xml file resides. The path is shown in the Messages tab after a restart of the BOINC client (reboot). And in the messages are also the entries showing that the cc_config.xml file has been read (starting with "Config:").

But still no message

The message I meant is here:
21-Feb-2010 00:57:35 [---] Config: use all coprocessors
which corresponds to
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
in your cc_config.xml and results in
21-Feb-2010 00:57:35 [---] ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD 4700/4800 (RV740/RV770) (CAL version 1.4.553, 1024MB, 1440 GFLOPS peak)

Sadly, I can't help you with the question about usage of your GPU, since I neither have one nor do I run linux. Perhaps you could ask at the projects that support ATI GPUs.

Gruß,
Gundolf

Milkyway has no Linux compatible ATI application.
Collatz has one that's experimental, runs with the anonymous platform and needs to be installed by hand.

All MW apps.
All normal Collayz apps
Collatz optimised apps

elect has already got the experimental Linux Collatz 2.01 app installed, from the following:

21-Feb-2010 00:57:35 [Collatz Conjecture] Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform

and:

He's also posted in this thread under a Different Nick at Collatz: ATI 9.12 / Linux64 / BOINC problem...

But has posted slightly different information, here his log shows two apps being started,
but at Collatz he's not posted any startup messages, but he's posted the following showing only GPU 0 is being used:

The cc_config.xml needs to be in the Boinc Data folder, not the Boinc folder,
the location is quoted in Boinc's startup messages.

It reads the setting

But if i read the activity on ati gpu1 is always 0% (as well the temp: 40 instead 66° ca)
