Message 29305 - Posted: 8 Dec 2009, 14:20:37 UTC

I like to setup my PC's so that I can use a Limited user acount for everyday use. When I install BOINC it runs fine on the admin acounts but when I go to the "Limited User" acount I get a popup from BOINC telling me that I need to add that acount to the "BOINC_MASTER" acount in order to use it.

I know I can uninstall BOINC and re-install it to get to work but that is a pain. Can someone tell me how to add an acount?

I am using Vista and XP so I need to have the info for both (unless it's done the same way).

Thanks!

That's for Home versions, but works for Pro versions just as well.

I am putting this on here because others may need the info plus to point out something that took me some time to figure out!

You can add users by going through the command line. You will need to be logged in as an administrator to be able to do this.

- Click on the 'Start' button.
- Click on 'Programs'.
- Click on 'Desktop-Accessories'.
- Click on 'Command Prompt'.
- In the command prompt window that opened, type: net localgroup boinc_admins 'username' /add (press Enter), where 'username' (without the quotes) is the user name you want to add. As far as I know, the user name is not case sensitive.

The above method can be used to add user names to the BOINC groups on Pro and Ultimate versions as well.

Now for my added 2 cents worth:

Make sure you are at the "C" Prompt before typing the above info. For those that don't know about DOS. Type "cd.." without the quotes and hit enter until you get to something like:

C:>

then type this:

net localgroup boinc_admins 'username' /add

It shouldn't matter, as the %systemdrive%:\Windows directory, %systemdrive%:\Windows\system32 and lots of other Windows sub-directories are in the system path. Besides, what if your system drive is D: and your page file drive is C: ? I have one of those systems. ;-)

I Knew someone would point that out!!

Yes you change the C to D or whatever drive you have your System on. I was thinking that most folks have their system on the C: Drive.

I don't know why but I try to enter the command before going to the Root Directory and it didn't work. It gave me a short lesson on how DOS can make you feel dumb! (For me that is not hard to do! ;) )

UPDATE:

I found that this don't work for the VISTA in fact BOINC will not even run/attach to the core program. Something about a password not being correct.

I have try to remove and re-install BOINC and still it only works under the Admin account.

Anyone got any ideas?
